India's national capital Delhi and surrounding areas experienceda dust storm and strong winds on Saturday (June 1), bringing some relief from days of scorching heat. The weather service forecasta day of mostly cloudy sky, a heat wave, and a dust storm or thunderstorm with very little rain and high gusts.
The residents got a much-needed break from the intense heat thanks to the shift in weather conditions. The city's highest temperature rose slightly on Friday, marking the sixth day in a row that Safdarjung, Delhi's base weatherstation, recorded a temperature over 45 degrees.
Delhi has had exceptionally high temperatures throughout the last two weeks of May. On Wednesday, Mungeshpur broke the national record by recording a scorching 52.3°C.
The previous day's high and low were, respectively, 45.6°C and 30.4°C. This May, which ended on Friday, was the warmest since 2013 when the city's highest temperature averaged 41.5°C. In May of this year, Delhi saw an average high temperature of 41.4°C. This was 1.5°C higher than the 39.9°C long-period average (LPA).
The highest temperature in the city is predicted by IMD to drop to 42°C on Sunday before gradually rising once again. Over the following three days, it is anticipated that the lowest temperature will fluctuate between 29°C and 30°C.
Delhi's peak electricity consumption earlier this week was the highest ever at 8302 MW. This new peak exceeded the previous record of 8000 MW, which was established on May 22 just a few days prior.
The experts claim that the hot weather is the main cause of the spike in power demand as it encourages people to use air conditioners and coolers more frequently, which increases electricity usage.
"The persistent heat wave across North India is leading to a sharp demand surge for electricity in the National Capital. The peak power demand in Delhi hit a new record of 8302 MW (as per SLDC). At Tata Power-DDL's end, we successfully met our highest-ever peak power demand of 2339 MW and have made sufficient arrangements to meet the demand," a spokesperson of Tata Power-DDL had told ANI.
