Cyclone Remal: Over 30 dead in northeast India in rain-related incidents

Torrential rains from Cyclone Remal causes a stone quarry collapse in Mizoram, India

Cyclone Remal left behind a trail of destruction in Northeastern India, with casualties going as high as 27 in Mizoram state alone. The cyclone made landfall in the eastern Indian state of West Bengal on the evening of May 26. Within hours, it reached Tripura state and caused the highest amount of rainfall there in the last two years. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the cyclonewas expectedto lose steam by Tuesday evening (May 28).

27 dead in Mizoram

The heavy rainfalls caused landslides in Mizoram, killing at least 27 people in the state, according to the state's Department of Information and Public Relations. The chief minister of the state later announced INR 4 lakh ($4,800) as ex-gratia to the kin of the deceased.

2killed in Meghalaya

In the aftermath of Cyclone Remal, at least two peoplewere killedand over 500 injured in rain-related incidents across Meghalaya state. Landslides occurred on the Shillong-Mawlai bypass and at Bivar Road in Oakland. Also, Langkyrding, Pynthorbah, Polo, Sawfurlong and Demseiniong areas saw flash floods.

2killed in Assam

Heavy rains ended up killing at least two people in Assam also, with at least 17 people left injured.

Here, a 60-year-old woman lost her life after being hit by a falling tree in Kamrup district. Another person died in Lakhimpur district in a landslide incident.

Assam CM Himanta BiswaSarma,posted on X, "I have instructed officials to be alert to respond to exigencies at the earliest. Request citizens not to venture out unless there is an emergency and be safe. We are constantly monitoring the situation."

Dhubri, South Salmara, Bajali, Barpeta, and Nalbari are under an orange alert, and Chirang, Goalpara, Baksa, Tamulpur, Dima Hasao, Cachar, Hailakandi, and Karimganj are under a red alert in the state. These areas will have their schools and educational institutions closed till May 29.For May 29,there is a yellow alertin effect for the remaining districts.
