Cyclone Remal to bring heavy rainfall to northeast India

Cyclone Remal

'Severe' cyclonic storm Remal has affected lives and lifelines in Bangladesh and India's West Bengal state with a total of 16 people reported dead so far. But it is now weakening into a deep depression.

Heavy rainfall is expected over parts of West Bengal and northeastern states on Tuesday (May 28), the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

The IMD bulletin stated that the deep depression will gradually weaken into a depression in the next 24 hours

Rainfall across India's northeast

Heavy rainfall is predicted over parts of Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram, Manipur and Tripura, and light rainfall over others.

The IMD has warned that the rain may cause damage to vulnerable structures and thatched huts. The low-lying areas may be inundated as well as localised flooding could be expected.

The weather agency has advised people in these states to move to safer places and avoid going to waterlogging-vulnerable areas.

In West Bengal too, light rainfall is forecast in most places, with heavy-to-very-heavy rainfall in isolated places.

On Monday, several West Bengal districts witnessed heavy rainfall and gusty winds, leaving six people dead.

The storm has snapped power linesand uprooted poles and trees while rain and high tides also flooded the coastal areas.

Meghalaya, Assam and neighbouring areas are under a ‘red’ alert ahead of very heavy rainfall associated with this storm on May 28 and 29.

"The cyclone being a translational event and Remal lasting for three days has had a temporary effect but it has helped the advance of the monsoon over the Bay of Bengal. Now, with the further increasing inflow, depth and strength of southwest monsoon winds, there are favourable conditions developing for the advancement of the southwest monsoon over Keraladuring the next five days," said Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, director general, IMD.
