Sarma said the university, situated in Meghalaya's Ri-Bhoi district, indulged in deforestation and cutting of hills, leading to the flash floods.

The university is operated by a foundation established by Mahbubul Hoque, a Bengali Muslim, who also serves as the chancellor.&nbsp;

Assam Chief Minister, referencing the three domes on the university's main gate, claimed that they resemble the architecture of Mecca and Medina.

What we are saying is that there should be a namghar (community prayer hall, part of Assam’s neo-Vaishnavite tradition) also there. ‘Mecca-Medina’, church. Make all three… They have kept a ‘Mecca’ there. Let them make a namghar, make a church. We will walk under all three, why will we walk under just one,” The Indian Express quoted him as saying.

He accused the university administration of engaging in what he termed the "father of jihad."

“When I spoke about Meghalaya University of Science and Technology (USTM), everyone criticised me. But earlier, Tarun Gogoi had said that Jorabat is the main reason for floods in Guwahati,” he stated.

The Assam CM has claimed that the hills were cut towards Guwahati, not Meghalaya.

"Why did the hills cut towards Guwahati and not towards Meghalaya? Is this not flood jihad?" he said.

Last week, taking to X, Sarma posted satellite images of Meghalaya's Greater Jorabat Hills and said, "After the recent flash floods in Guwahati, we have gone through satellite images of Meghalaya's Greater Jorabat Hills, located 6-7 km from the city. The deforestation where USTM University is located is self-explanatory. But my concern is not just the area near USTM. Below is a time-lapse video of the destruction in other regions of the Greater Jorabat Hills in Meghalaya. It also explains how a cloud burst here leads to rapid floods in Guwahati, like the one recently. We will work with Meghalaya Govt to protect our shared habitats."

Slamming Sarma for his remark, Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi wrote on X, “Can someone stop the Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa, from his jihad of repeated nonsense? It is simply an exaggerated cover-up for his failures and scams."

At least five security personnel have been injured after a mob surrounded the Chief Minister of the Indian state of Meghalaya, Conrad Sangma’s office, late Monday (July 24). This comes after chaos erupted outside the CM office where hundreds had gathered demanding the creation of a winter capital for the northeastern state.&nbsp;

<h2>About the violence</h2>

The CM was reported to be unharmed while the mob continued to surround his office complex, located in the state’s Tura. Sangma was taken indoors as the protesters blocked the roads and posed a security threat.&nbsp;

Subsequently, the protesters began pelting stones, some of which hit the CM office’s windows. In turn, the police used tear gas to disperse the crowd. “At least five police personnel were injured when the crowd attacked the CM’s secretariat at Tura in the evening today,” the CM secretariat told news agency PTI.&nbsp;

The situation is under control but tense, said the CM’s office. Section 144 was imposed in Tura town with immediate effect. The Meghalaya CM also announced Rs 50,000 ($611) as ex-gratia payment for injured personnel and said that their medical expenses will be borne by the state government.&nbsp;

<h2>What preceded the protest?</h2>

According to the police, protesters were ostensibly seeking winter capital before a large number of outsiders entered the crowd gathered and began throwing stones at the office. There were also reports of tyres being burnt in several places across the town.

Prior to the violence, the Meghalaya CM was in the midst of holding a key meeting with the representatives of protesting civil bodies – Achik Conscious Holistically Integrated Krima (ACHIK) and the Garo Hills State Movement Committee (GHSMC).&nbsp;

The groups, which were invited by Sangma for talks, had been on a hunger strike and had demanded that Tura be declared the winter capital of the state. The Meghalaya CM called the incident “very unfortunate,” in a video statement after the violence and said that the discussions with the protest leaders were almost over when they “heard some agitation from outside,” adding that “it seems that the pelting of stones was initiated by people who were not part of the agitating groups.”&nbsp;

“I asked them not to create any scene out here. Their leaders (of the protesting NGOs) went outside to speak to the people. They came back and said they did not know who these people were, never seen them before during the fasting protest,” he added.&nbsp;

Sangma also said that the leaders themselves were taking shelter inside when the violence began, as they were not able to leave. Another meeting on the issue will be held in the presence of all stakeholders, said the CM, which has been tentatively scheduled in the state capital Shillong next month.

This comes after chaos erupted outside the CM office where hundreds had gathered demanding the creation of a winter capital for the northeastern state. About the violence The CM was reported to be unharmed while the mob continued to surround his office complex, located in the state’s Tura. Sangma was taken indoors as the protesters blocked the roads and posed a security threat. Subsequently, the protesters began pelting stones, some of which hit the CM office’s windows. In turn, the police used tear gas to disperse the crowd. “At least five police personnel were injured when the crowd attacked the CM’s secretariat at Tura in the evening today,” the CM secretariat told news agency PTI. The situation is under control but tense, said the CM’s office. Section 144 was imposed in Tura town with immediate effect. The Meghalaya CM also announced Rs 50,000 ($611) as ex-gratia payment for injured personnel and said that their medical expenses will be borne by the state government. What preceded the protest? According to the police, protesters were ostensibly seeking winter capital before a large number of outsiders entered the crowd gathered and began throwing stones at the office. There were also reports of tyres being burnt in several places across the town. Prior to the violence, the Meghalaya CM was in the midst of holding a key meeting with the representatives of protesting civil bodies – Achik Conscious Holistically Integrated Krima (ACHIK) and the Garo Hills State Movement Committee (GHSMC). Ernest Mawrie, the leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Meghalaya, predicted on Wednesday that his party would win 10 to 15 seats in that state before the results of the elections in three Northeastern states were announced. He added that no party would be able to form the next government in Meghalaya without the BJP. In a statement given to ANI, he said, "After voting, we have discussed and we believe, we will win a minimum of 10 seats and a maximum of 15 seats."

Meanwhile, social media is inundated with rumours that a post-poll alliance between former allies BJP and NPP is possible. A recent meeting between Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma and Meghalaya incumbent CM Sangama has also further fuelled the speculation market.

The chief minister of Meghalaya and candidate from the South Tura assembly district, claimed that his party would win with an absolute majority and would benefit from a divided opposition. We are not concerned about the outcomes, he declared. However, speculations are being made that the ruling NPP party may join forces with its former ally BJP to form the government if it falls short of the magical number. A recent meeting between Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma and Sangma has further fuelled such speculations. The National People's Party (NPP) leader and Meghalaya Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma, stated that the party is still short of a few seats for a majority in the assembly elections, the results of which were declared on Thursday. He further added that the party would wait for the final results before deciding on the way forward. After exit polls predicted a hung assembly in Meghalaya, speculation was rife after Sangma held a meeting with his Assam counterpart, Himanta Biswa Sarma, in Guwahati. Meghalaya Election Results 2023: Check full list of NPP winning and leading candidates

Three Indian states in the country’s northeast region held their assembly elections on Monday (February 27). The exit polls began hours later after Meghalaya and Nagaland finished their voting, earlier Monday while Tripura had finished polling on February 16. So far, the exit polls have suggested that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies will lead in two states while there will be a close race for Meghalaya.&nbsp;

All three states have 60 seats in their assembly where 31 seats are needed to secure the majority. The elections in Meghalaya and Nagaland took place across 59 constituencies in each of the two states, early Monday. However, one seat in Meghalaya was adjourned due to the death of a candidate while no poll was held for one seat in Nagaland as there was only one candidate.&nbsp;

According to recent data from the Election Commission, the turnout in both states was over 80 per cent with Meghalaya at 81.57 per cent and Nagaland at 85.90 per. Meanwhile, Tripura recorded nearly 87.6 per cent in the one-day assembly elections when it held the polls nearly two weeks ago. In Meghalaya, the polling took place across 3,419 stations and 2,291 in Nagaland.&nbsp;

The EC in its statement after the polls also said that it seized 23 times more freebies during the Meghalaya, Nagaland and Tripura elections than it did in 2018. The freebies included cash, alcohol, precious metals and even drugs worth at least $1.70 billion (Rs.169.6 crore). The EC also noted that there was no repolling needed at any of the 5,710 stations and thanked polling personnel for conducting the elections peacefully.&nbsp;

Exit polls for Meghalaya assembly elections

As per exit polls by Times Now-ETG Research, 29 seats were estimated for Others, followed by 22 for the National People’s Party (NPP), BJP with five, and Congress with three seats.&nbsp;

Zee News-Matrize estimates 24 seats will be secured by NPP, while 22 will be with Others, followed by approximately nine seats for BJP, and four for Congress.

India Today-Axis My India predicted that 23 seats will be secured by Others, followed by 21 seats by NPP while Congress and BJP will secure nine and six seats respectively.&nbsp;

The exit polls published by several agencies late Monday have led many to believe that the northeastern state will witness a hung assembly this year. This would not be the first time that has taken place in Meghalaya as in 2018 there was no single party or alliance which managed to secure a majority which led incumbent Chief Minister Conrad Sangma to form a coalition with United Democratic Party (UDP), BJP and others to form the state government.&nbsp;

This time around Sangma’s NPP has stood in second place in most polls and after the exit polls, the current CM once again hinted that if they fall short of the majority the party will form an alliance.&nbsp;

Exit polls for Tripura assembly elections&nbsp;

India Today-Axis My India predicted that BJP and its ally, Indigenous Peoples Front of Tripura (IPFT) will manage to secure 40 seats, followed by TMP at 12 and 16 seats may be won by Left and its ally Congress.&nbsp;

Times Now-ETG estimated 24 seats for BJP and its ally, followed by 21 for Left and its ally, 14 for TMP, and one seat will be taken by Others.

According to Zee News-Matrize exit polls, BJP and ally can secure 31 seats, followed by Left and ally at 16, while 12 seats are predicted for TMP and one for Others.

Two of the three exit polls in Tripura show BJP and its ally IPFT will manage to secure the majority with the Left-Congress alliance quite behind on the estimates. Meanwhile, Times Now-ETG predicted that it might be a close race and that a hung assembly was a possibility.&nbsp;

Exit polls for Nagaland assembly elections

India Today-Axis My India predicted 43 seats for BJP and its ally Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP), followed by Others at 10, five seats for Naga People’s Front (NPF), and one seat for Congress.

Times Now-ETG estimates at least 44 seats for BJP-NDPP followed by nine for Others, six for NPF, and none for Congress.

Zee News-Matrize predicts that BJP-NDPP will gain 39 seats, Others may secure 15, while three were estimated for NPF, and two for Congress.

As the exit polls indicate, BJP and its ally NDPP are poised to secure a comfortable majority, the former contested for 20 seats while the latter sent candidates for the rest of the 40 seats, as a part of their coalition.&nbsp;

However, exit polls are not always accurate and are often vastly different from the actual outcome. The EC will announce the result of the elections on March 2. Notably, this round of assembly elections is deemed important as these are the first of back-to-back elections across the country in different states. This will also be followed by six other state elections in 2023 leading up to the general elections, next year.&nbsp;

The Indian state of Meghalaya is well known for the huge amount of rainfall it receives every year and Mawsynram – known as the wettest place in the country – broke a 66-year-old record this week. On Friday, the town experienced a mammoth 1003.6 mm of rainfall in 24 hours – the highest ever on a day in June, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The previous record for most rainfall in a single day in Mawsynram was 944.7 mm on 7 June 1966, according to a PTI report.

"Mawsynram is at present the wettest place in India, with an average annual rainfall of 11802.4 mm (average of the 1974-2022 period). Cherrapunji receives 11359.4 mm of rainfall in a year (average of the 1971-2020 period)," Sunit Das, Scientist at IMD's regional centre in Guwahati, told PTI.

Cherrapunji, which is among the wettest places in the world, also saw around 972 mm of rainfall on the same day – the highest in June since 1995 and the third highest in the last 122 years.

"It doesn't always rain like this. 50-60 cm is normal once or twice every year. But 80 cm and above is certainly not usual," Das told PTI while explaining the sudden increase in rainfall.

United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) is a designated militant organisation (separatist group) operating in the Indian state of Assam. 
 
"Rajkhowa surrendered to the police in South Garo Hills district. He is now being interrogated," district police chief P. Pandey said late on Wednesday night but refused to give further details.

Rajkhowa is currently under the custody of the Army intelligence and is being brought to Assam, they said. 
 
He is known to be a close confidant of Paresh Baruah, the so-called 'commander-in-chief' of United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent). 
 
The sources said Rajkhowa was based in Bangladesh till recently and came to Meghalaya few weeks ago. 
 
His surrender is a major setback for the militant group, said a senior security expert. 
 
The ULFA (I) has been demanding an independent state of Assam. The government had banned the outfit in 1990.

Schools in Meghalaya which are shut for six months due to the COVID-19 pandemic will partially reopen from next week for students to meet teachers to clarify their doubts, Education minister Lahkmen Rymbui said on Friday.

The schools will be open for students of class 9 to 12 to meet teachers to clear their doubts but there will be no regular classes and no classroom session, he said.

"Schools will be partially opened up from September 21 for students to come and meet their teachers and clarify doubts on subjects they find it difficult. There will be no regular classes and no classroom sessions," Rymbui told PTI.

The guidelines for reopening of schools have been issued on Thursday, he said.

The Education minister said the state government has rationalised the school curriculum for this academic year and the adjusted academic calendar for all levels in view of COVID-19 pandemic.

As per the guidelines issued by the Education Department principal secretary DP Wahlang, "regular" classroom activities in schools, colleges and other educational institutions would remain closed till September 30 across the state.

The direction from the Ministry of Home Affairs which emphasised on easing restrictions in areas outside containment areas across the country, has also been taken into consideration.

"Regular class activities for schools, colleges, and educational institutions will continue to remain closed up to September, 30," Wahlang said in the order.

Students who intend to attend the teacher-student counselling would have to get the written consent of their parents or guardians to visit the schools and educational institutions.

Schools should have flexibility in school timings, students visit and uniform code and ensure short duration visit of students, the notification said.

Elementary school teachers are to attend schools as per their roster duty chart developed by the school for compulsory transaction of daily or weekly lessons plans or worksheet accordingly via online or through parental distribution at the school campus, Wahlang said.

Schools have been asked to develop individual micro planning relating to flexibility in school timings, the scheduling of students visit and uniform code, he said.

The notification said that all schools should prepare a Continuous Learning Plan (CLP) to ensure all students are learning, continue online or distance learning modes and develop a 50 per cent attendance of teaching and non-teaching staff.

The department has laid strict emphasis on compliance of health protocols, such as maintaining physical distance, wearing masks, washing hands with soap and alcohol-based hand sanitisers and sanitising all teaching materials.

Because of an unusual mortality of pigs in the Dhemaji, North Lakhimpur, Biswanath, Dibrugarh, Sivasagar and Jorhat districts of Assam and in some districts of Arunachal Pradesh, the transportation of pigs from other states into Meghalaya have been stopped until further orders, said the notification issued by veterinary principal secretary S P Ahammed.

All government pig farms, private farms and pig farmers should take adequate measures to ensure strict hygiene and bio-security such as disinfection of the farms and equipment, and restricting entry of any outsiders, it said.

Signs of high fever in pigs and any abnormal morality should be brought to the notice of the district authorities, it added.

Quoting reports, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said pigs in the two states are suffering from some kind of flu. He said this would be clear once the test results are made public.

Appealing to the people not to panic, Mr Tynsong said pork consumed should be sourced from within the state and should be properly cooked for at least 30 minutes.

"All districts have been alerted and steps would be taken by the animal husbandry and veterinary department to keep a check on both government-run and private piggery farms in case the pigs develop any sickness," he said.

The training commenced on Monday and its main focus is counter-terrorism on difficult terrains like mountains and jungles.

Command Post Exercise (CPX) and Field Training Exercise (FTX) will be conducted in the 14-days training schedule. For both the CPX and FTX, a scenario where both the nations are working together in a counter-terrorism environment will be simulated under the United Nations charter.

The Bangladesh Army's contingent is under the command of Commander Md. Shafiul Azam. The contingent is Bangladesh's 42nd infantry regiment. Indian Army's Bihar regiment will take part in the training, the regiment is led by Brigadier Rajesh Sharma.&nbsp;

Each side comprises 128 jawans, 12 officers and 10 junior commission officers (JCOs).

The FTX training's curriculum is steadily planned where the participants will initially get familiar with each other's organisational structure and tactical drills.

Subsequently, joint tactical exercise will be conducted wherein the battle drills of both Indian and Bangladeshi armies will be practised.

 
The training will end with a final validation activity in which troops of both armies will jointly practice a counter-terrorist operation in a controlled and simulated environment.

In addition, to understand each other at a tactical level, greater cultural understanding will be emphasised to increase military trust and partnership between the two countries.

This exercise will conclude on February 16.

Forum of India Food Importers (FIFI) and North East Entrepreneurs Alliance (NEEA) agreed to build cooperation by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) during recently organized North East Food Show 2019 by the government of Meghalaya and SIAL Paris. 
 
The MoU has been signed with an objective to facilitate food business, food processing, food ingredient sourcing, providing market linkages and knowledge exchange between both the parties. 
 
NEEA aims to work closely with FIFI to curate products from the region which can find the platform at par to the international food and beverage products. With this MoU, NEEA is also looking forward to creating a few geographical product categories, brand them accordingly and generate long term brand equity for them. 
 
The GI tagged commodities remain underutilized and with FIFI, NEEA hopes to leverage the opportunity not only in India but across the world.

The eighth edition of the joint military exercise covered company-level Joint Training on counter-terrorism operation in semi-urban terrain under United Nations mandate.&nbsp;

The exercise was aimed at building and promoting positive relations between both the armies.

The 14-day-long exercise schedule was focused upon training on various lectures and drills associated with counter-terrorist handling and firing with each others’ weapons, battle obstacles course, special heliborne operations and case studies of various operations carried out in the counter-terrorist environment.

“Two tactical exercises were scheduled during the training - one on counter-terrorism scenario and the other on Humanitarian and Disaster Relief (HADR) operations,” said a senior official of Indian Army.

The People's Liberations Army (PLA) contingent comprised 130 personnel of Tibet Military Command.

“The exercise culminated with a grand closing ceremony where the participating troops displayed high standards of military drill. In addition, enthralling skill display was presented by the troops of both the countries during the ceremony which left the spectators spellbound. The two armies have gained from each other’s expertise and experience in the conduct of counter-terrorism and company-level operations. The troops of both the contingent departed on a healthy note of mutual informal respect and goodwill,” read a release from the Indian Army.
