One person was killed, and several were injured in a nitrogen gas blast near Amba Vilas Palace in Karnataka’s Mysuru, City Police Commissioner Seema Latkar said on Thursday (Dec 25). According to police, the accident happened near the entrance of the Karnataka Exhibition Authority. The incident happened when a balloon vendor was filling balloons using a helium gas cylinder.
A large number of people had arrived for the exhibition due to the Christmas vacation. The cylinder exploded and triggered scenes of panic, with people screaming and running in distress on the busy road, news agency PTI reported.
The balloon seller was identified as 40-year-old Saleem. He was a native of Tofiya village in Kannauj district of Uttar Pradesh, and was killed on the spot. He used to sell balloons in front of the palace regularly.

The initial findings said Saleem was travelling on a bicycle fitted with a helium cylinder, which was being used to inflate balloons at the time of the blast. Meanwhile, four others, including a woman, suffered injuries. The injured, identified as Lakshmi from Bengaluru, Manjula from Nanjangud, Shahina Shebar from Kolkata, and Kotresh Gutte from Ranebennur, were rushed to KR Hospital for treatment.
