Amit Shah: Stalwart and vital cog in BJP machine takes oath as minister in Modi 3.0 cabinet

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Amit Shah registered a stunning victory in the Gandhinagar Lok Sabha seat of Gujarat by a huge margin of more than 744,000 votes. He defeated his nearest Congress rival, Sonal Patel to retain the constituency. Shah on Sunday (Jun 9) took oath as a minister in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's cabinet.
Gandhinagar Lok Sabha seat has remained a BJP bastion since 1989 with Shankersinh Vaghela's win. BJP veterans like Lal Krishna Advani and Atal Bihari Vajpayee have also won from this seat. Advani has won it since 1998 and remained the most popular face there. Carrying the legacy forward, Shah emerged victorious in 2019 and in the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections 2024.
Shah, a stalwart of the party, is regarded as the right-hand man of Narendra Modi and one of the most important cogs in the BJP machine.
After winning in 2019, Shah was given the tough task of managing the home ministry. He also became the first minister of cooperation in 2021.
Shah is the chief strategist of the BJP and became the apparent second-most powerful man in India, second only to Modi.

The 59-year-old held several posts as a member of the Gujarat Legislative Assembly from Sarkhej from 1997 to 2012 and Naranpura from 2012 to 2017.

When he was 18 years old, he joined the BJP after securing a position in the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), which is a student union affiliated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).
Since 1987, Shah has been a dedicated BJP member and has taken charge of crucial elections at the Centre and states.
Important decision as the home minister
Amit Shah has made several crucial and historic decisions. He moved a resolution to scrap Article 370 on August 5, 2019, just a few months after taking oath as home minister. The move was aimed at tackling political instability and insurgency in Jammu and Kashmir and the abrogation divided the state into two union territories - J&K and Ladakh.
In 2019, Shah also declared in the Rajya Sabha that the National Register of Citizens (NRC) would be implemented.
