Shivraj Singh takes oath as cabinet minister on June 9

Prominent Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former chief minister of Madhya Pradesh Shivraj Singh Chouhan will now be a part of Narendra Modi 3.0 cabinet. On Sunday (June 9), he took oath as a cabinet minister for the first time. Chouhan is a popular figure in the central Indian state and holds the record of being the longest-serving CM of MP.

In the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections, BJP won all 29 seats in the state. Previously, Chouhan led the BJP to win the November 2023 assembly elections in Madhya Pradesh, following which the central leadership of the party promoted him to the centre and appointed Ujjain MLA Mohan Yadav as MP's chief minister.

Who is Shivraj Singh Chouhan?

Chouhan's political journey began at the age of 13 when he joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in 1972. Previously, Chouhan led BJP's youth wing from 2000 to 2002. He also represented Vidisha Lok Sabha seat from 1991 to 2005.

The ex-MP CM is best known for his welfare schemes. In Madhya Pradesh, he provided rice at Rs 1 per kg to the impoverished, introduced the Sambal scheme for women labourers, offered free education to girls and initiated schemes like Ladli Laxmi Yojana for womenupliftment.

Previous stints in the Lok Sabha

Chouhan first entered the Lok Sabha in 1991. He was again elected an MP in the 11th Lok Sabha in 1996. This time, he served on the Committee on Urban and Rural Development. He wasre-elected to the 12th and 13th Lok Sabha in 1998 and 1999 respectively and held several committee positions.
