It's a mundane premise for a TV show, yet The Solitary Gourmet draws a cult-like following around Asia, captivating millions of viewers with its simplicity, nostalgia and deeply quirky Japanese feel.

A lanky businessman ventures into a hole-in-the-wall restaurant and savours his meal alone. It's a mundane premise for a TV show, yet Japan's "The Solitary Gourmet" draws a cult-like following around Asia, captivating millions of viewers with its simplicity, nostalgia and deeply quirky Japanese feel. Combining culinary discovery with the showcase of local heritage, the show centres on fictional entrepreneur Goro Inogashira, who drives around in his Mini, using brief business meetings as a pretext for his gastronomic wanderings. On a shoot for an episode of the latest season, which AFP visited, actor Yutaka Matsushige studies the menu at a tuna restaurant where the camera crew has set up, asks the owner for her recommendations, then suggests a rewrite of the script. "The atmosphere of a restaurant, the welcome from the owners... all of that creates a story that Goro immerses himself in, and you immediately feel the life experience and history of the person behind the stove," Matsushige told AFP. "When we talk with them, they sometimes suggest dishes that weren't planned, and we add them in during the shoot," he said. The 63-year-old actor has been playing Inogashira, invariably dressed in a suit and tie, on screen since 2012. The character is also the star of the eponymous manga by Jiro Taniguchi and Masayuki Kusumi on which the show is based. Nostalgia in a bowl of soup That original work "is less a story in the traditional sense than wanderings through unfamiliar regions where you simply stop to eat", Matsushige said. "I wanted viewers to almost feel like they were watching a documentary," explained the actor, who over the course of his career has worked with a clutch of prominent Japanese filmmakers such as Takashi Miike, Kiyoshi Kurosawa and Takeshi Kitano. During the show, Goro's internal musings about other diners at the restaurant as he nods approvingly at the food, peppered with close-ups of the dish, make for a distinctly Japanese experience. Broadcast late at night in Japan, the series had at first very modest ratings before gradually finding its audience, including in Taiwan and South Korea, where some episodes were filmed. A Mandarin remake shot in Taiwan was also released. Despite the success of the manga in Europe, the series is only available on YouTube. Former South Korean president Yoon Suk Yeol, sentenced in February to life in prison for insurrection, declared in 2023 that he was a devoted fan. For Matsushige, this success stems from the work's uniqueness. "Nowadays, people expect TV series to be easy to follow and spectacular," he said. "The expression of subtle nuances, like the nostalgia you feel while drinking a bowl of soup, is being lost." With this show, "we wanted everyone to be able to have their own interpretation... I'd like the series to evoke abroad a sensibility closer to Yasujiro Ozu's films", which capture the subtle nuances of everyday life, than to the more grand and spectacular films of Akira Kurosawa. A film adaptation, written and directed by Matsushige and partially shot in France, was released in Japan last year. Lifetime of experience The series also aims to support the family-run restaurants that host the shoots, which are never too chic or trendy, so as not to clash with Goro's character, noted producer Shiori Kojima. But often the eateries brought into the spotlight subsequently see long lines forming at their doors. Kenji Kamagata, 71, who has run his tuna restaurant for nearly three decades, admits he had previously refused any television appearance for that reason, changing his mind only because he is a "huge fan" of Matsushige. The actor says he takes his family to dine in the restaurants where he has filmed, but always before the episode airs. "Many traditional restaurants are gradually being replaced by chains," but those featured in the series "are often run by elderly people who are keeping their know-how alive," said Matsushige. "You understand that the katsudon (a bowl of rice topped with breaded pork cutlet) is the fruit of an entire lifetime of experience. "That's what makes the dish so delicious."

Diljit Dosanjh and his US citizenship have long been discussed, and now he has again caught the attention when he laughed off a green card question.

Diljit Dosanjh’s citizenship has been discussed time and again. While nothing has been confirmed, reports claim that the Punjabi singer, who is hugely popular not only in his homeland but also in the US, is not an Indian citizen. In May, it was reported that Dosanjh became a US citizen in 2022. However, there has been no official confirmation. Now, as the actor is back in the headlines over his film Satluj, Diljit teased his millions of fans during an Instagram Live when he indirectly mentioned a "green card." But does he actually have one? That we don’t know. Diljit Dosanjh on a US Green Card During the Instagram Live, Diljit addressed the citizenship debate and mentioned the US Green Card. Replying to a fan who suggested that the Lover singer should apply for a US Green Card after Satluj was pulled down from the platform. Responding to the fan, Diljit said, "I'll take a card and colour it green. I'm not saying anything. Sab chhodke ye news ban jayegi (People will leave everything and make headlines out of this). <p>For a generation that has grown up on a steady supply&nbsp;of&nbsp;romantic comedies, particularly stories that end at a person finding&nbsp;their ever after and not really aware what actually happens next,&nbsp;the&nbsp;new wave&nbsp;of&nbsp;anti-romance&nbsp;movies is both satisfying and terrifying. It is essentially a shift from idealised fairytales towards more realistic, sometimes cynical, depictions&nbsp;of&nbsp;love.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The new wave rejects the&nbsp;idea that happy endings are&nbsp;the&nbsp;only reality, something fans of the classic romcoms find hard to digest. The films aim to delve&nbsp;deep into&nbsp;the different realities&nbsp;of&nbsp;modern-day relationships. While&nbsp;the&nbsp;earlier&nbsp;films&nbsp;ended at&nbsp;the&nbsp;beginning&nbsp;of&nbsp;love stories,&nbsp;the&nbsp;anti-romance&nbsp;releases explore the&nbsp;realities&nbsp;of&nbsp;what happens after&nbsp;the&nbsp;romance takes&nbsp;off. Even though such films are gaining traction as a separate genre only now, cinema has been packaging&nbsp;anti-romcom stories for years.&nbsp;</p><h3><strong>Choosing Self-Discovery Over 'The One'</strong></h3><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Much before&nbsp;the&nbsp;success&nbsp;of Sentimental Value, filmmaker Joachim Trier had&nbsp;offered fans another gem -&nbsp;The&nbsp;Worst Person In&nbsp; The&nbsp;World.&nbsp; The&nbsp;film chronicles four years&nbsp;of&nbsp;Julie's life, ably played by Renate Reinsve. What starts as Julie's journey navigating&nbsp;the challenges of her love life and her struggles to find a suitable professional path, the film goes much deeper as it progresses. It rejects&nbsp;the narrative that true love completes a person, which has been a staple of most classic romcoms of the past. It also serves as a reminder why one should invest in themselves rather than fixating on finding 'the one'.&nbsp;</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>&nbsp;</p>

The Worst Person in the World

<p>&nbsp;</p><h3><strong>Ripping Apart the 'Cinderella' Fantasy</strong></h3><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Another film that set up classic romantic tropes only to shatter them is Anora. In the 2024 release, a young sex worker from Brooklyn gets her chance at a Cinderella story when she marries the son of an oligarch. But what happens after the news reaches the boy's family in Russia? Well, her love story is threatened as his parents have an entirely different plan. The Oscar-winning film changes the idea of a timeless romance between a sex worker and a rich person (seen frequently in films like Pretty Woman in the past), Anora rips the fantasy of true love saving a person. Instead, the film starring Mikey Madison and Mark Eydelshteyn draws attention to the transactional nature of class disparities.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>&nbsp;</p>

Anora

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Another film that takes a different route from the regular 'meet-cutes' trajectory is Together Together. Romance isn't on the cards and that's what makes the premise of the Ed Helms and Patti Harrison-starrer unexpected. The story is built around Matt and Anna, who meet for a very specific purpose - surrogacy. And as a result, the 2021 release prioritises platonic love and focusses on self-discovery. It also shatters the age-old notion that co-dependent relationships are the only the peak of romance.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Unlike many movies that take lies as the ultimate climax, Kristoffer Borgli's recent film, The Drama, places a shocking confession at the heart of its story. With a moral anchor in place, the Zendaya and Robert Pattinson-starrer challenges the notion that love conquers all. In fact, it takes all the hopeful tropes of a wedding planning and replaces them with moral complexity, extreme confusion and awkwardness. While for most people, rom-coms ride high on aspirational fantasy, this one plays out as a dark and anxiety-inducing black comedy.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>&nbsp;</p>

The Drama

Even though it's primarily a supernatural horror film, it does explore the toxic consequences of entitlement and possessiveness. It transforms a 'happily ever after' fantasy into a nightmare, quite literally. Stalking, owning and controlling - the tropes that have often defined onscreen love in the past are shown here for what they are. And it's not just for one partner. The male protagonist is also being viewed as a red flag disguised as a green flag. Even though he appears to be a nice guy, many have pointed out that it is his obsessive choice to magically manipulate the girl he likes that drives the story ahead.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>They say when the fairytale ends, the reality begins, and it seems, cinema is attempting to mirror the complications of love in the digital age. But while the landscape of rom-coms is continually reinventing, the changing cinematic landscape also poses a much larger question - do we no longer have the appetite for fairytale romance or is the reality only good when served once a while?</p>

A new wave of realistic, cynical "anti-romance" films is fundamentally shifting modern cinema away from traditional rom-com tropes. Rather than ending at the blissful beginning of a relationship, recent cinematic works pull back the curtain on what happens after the romance takes off.

Fresh off the historic box-office success of her blockbuster superhero film Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra, actress Kalyani Priyadarshan was also spotted at the Center Court. The actress spent her Wednesday afternoon completely immersed in the high-stakes action of the tournament. Her presence did not go unnoticed; the official Wimbledon Instagram page warmly welcomed her, sharing her photos with the caption, "Kalyani Priyadarshan, a pleasure to welcome you to Wimbledon." Kalyani Priyadarshan at Wimbledon Wimbledon is as much a celebration of classic summer style as it is of elite tennis, and Kalyani perfectly understood the assignment. Embracing the tournament's traditional style code, she exuded effortless sophistication in a light blue outfit. Kalyani opted for a crisp, tailored look that radiated "queen vibes." Keeping her look minimally accessorised but structurally sharp, she leaned into a clean, modern silhouette. Her hair was styled in soft, natural waves cascading over her shoulders, while her makeup remained understated, focusing on neutral tones, a soft flush, and clean skin. The ensemble perfectly bridged the gap between modern luxury and retro court-side glamour, making her an instant fashion standout in the crowd. The Wimbledon post shared a series of photos on Instagram where Kalyani could be seen posing with a cutout of the Wimbledon trophy and the devoruing into local savouries at the court.

Emily added with a smile, "And the truth and the facts have spoken for themselves.
