After the performance, Minhaj took to Instagram to congratulate Zakir, sharing photos from the evening that included their on-stage interactions, a warm hug backstage, and even a glimpse of Zakir’s parents proudly cheering him on. Hasan Minhaj congratulates Zakir Khan “A historic night for comedy around the world! Last night I got to see my brother @zakirkhan_208 aka Zakir Bhai become the first comedian in history to headline @thegarden entirely in Hindi. He combines storytelling and poetry in ways that are elevating the genre of comedy to places I’ve never seen before. I also think my parents love him more than me (I’m okay with that).

One of the ways in which his detractors are trying to criticise Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is by sharing videos from his past as an entertainer. The dance videos being shared include one in which he appeared bare-chested, wearing latex pants and high heels. Some feature moves so bizarre that I am not including them in the links, for fear they could be deepfakes. But one thing is clear: Zelensky had a strong run in Ukraine’s showbiz industry, before becoming a leader watched by the world for standing up to mighty Russia since its invasion of Ukraine. In fact, one of the roles he portrayed was that of a man who accidentally became president. Here is what you should know about the Ukrainian president’s entertainment past.

Zelensky was a showbiz star since the 1990s

Zelensky started as a comedian, forming the troupe ‘Kvartal 95’ in 1997. The troupe, named after his childhood neighbourhood, competed in KVN, a well-known Russian comedy competition, and gained regional fame. Between 1998 and 2003, Zelensky performed with Kvartal 95 in KVN’s Major League, touring post-Soviet nations.

In 2003, he left KVN after declining a job offer and experiencing an antisemitic incident (Zelensky is Jewish). Kvartal 95 then transformed into Studio Kvartal 95, a production company that created television shows for Ukraine’s 1+1 channel.

Also read: Zelensky, a 'dictator' or popular war president? Ukrainian Prez tells Trump elections impossible during war — but could he win if held?

Zelensky was the director of Studio Kvartal 95

Zelensky took up leadership of Studio Kvartal 95 from 2003 to 2011 as its artistic director, turning it into one of Ukraine’s top entertainment studios, producing films, cartoons and television shows. In 2005, it launched the popular comedy show Vechirniy Kvartal on Ukraine’s Inter TV.
Zelensky was a key performer and producer of the show.

Also read: ‘Ready for a trilateral meet’: Zelensky on meeting Putin after talks with Trump in White House

Acting career of Zelensky

The dance videos resurfacing currently on social media are mainly from 2006, when Zelensky won Ukraine’s Dancing with the Stars competition—something that, at the time, boosted his popularity.
He went on to star in romantic comedies between 2008 and 2012, including Love in the Big City and its sequel. He also starred in Rzhevskiy Versus Napoleon, establishing himself as a leading actor.
He was a general producer of Inter TV from 2011 to 2012, expanding his influence in Ukrainian media.

https://www.wionews.com/videos/ukraine-moldova-s-unity-can-t-be-broken-zelensky-1755460776724/embed

How reel became real: Zelensky acted as Ukraine’s president before becoming one

Zelensky gained international attention as the voice of Paddington Bear in the Ukrainian versions of the films Paddington (2014) and Paddington 2 (2017), earning global recognition.

Then, the most unlikely thing happened in 2015: Zelensky starred as an accidental president, and went on to become president of Ukraine. In the hit TV series Servant of the People, he played Vasiliy Goloborodko, a teacher who is elected president after his anti-corruption rant goes viral and strikes a chord with the public.
This established his image as an anti-corruption advocate and set the stage for his political rise in 2019. The show was a massive success and even inspired a political party with the same name.

Yes, Zelensky is an award-winning, influential entertainer of Ukraine

Zelensky returned as artistic director of Kvartal 95 from 2013 to 2019, producing content and performing.

He also founded the NGO The League of Laughter and produced 10 feature films.
He won more than 30 Teletriumph National Television Awards during this period.

Also story: What exactly happened in Trump-Zelensky meeting? Know in 6 points

Is it fair to target Zelensky for having been an entertainer?

His detractors are now using clips and videos from his past to tarnish Zelensky’s image. They’re calling him a puppet simply because he used to be a dancer and comedic performer.
Many world leaders, including US President Ronald Reagan, had careers in entertainment.

Zelensky’s showbiz years, while defined by his comedic talent, charisma, and media skills, should not be used as fodder for judging his performance as a president.
In a way, Zelensky is a victim of his own success in the entertainment industry. But it is noteworthy that, in spite of the power imbalance, Zelensky stood up to a leader like Russian President Vladimir Putin. His legacy should be judged on that basis—not on what he did for a living before becoming president.

It is fair to argue that Zelensky is a victim of his own success in the entertainment industry but he should be remembered as a leader who stood up to a powerful rival like Russian President Vladimir Putin

Zelensky was a showbiz star since the 1990s Zelensky started as a comedian, forming the troupe ‘Kvartal 95’ in 1997. Zelensky was the director of Studio Kvartal 95 Zelensky took up leadership of Studio Kvartal 95 from 2003 to 2011 as its artistic director, turning it into one of Ukraine’s top entertainment studios, producing films, cartoons and television shows. In 2005, it launched the popular comedy show Vechirniy Kvartal on Ukraine’s Inter TV. Zelensky was a key performer and producer of the show. He went on to star in romantic comedies between 2008 and 2012, including Love in the Big City and its sequel. He also starred in Rzhevskiy Versus Napoleon, establishing himself as a leading actor. He was a general producer of Inter TV from 2011 to 2012, expanding his influence in Ukrainian media. https://www.wionews.com/videos/ukraine-moldova-s-unity-can-t-be-broken-zelensky-1755460776724/embed How reel became real: Zelensky acted as Ukraine’s president before becoming one Zelensky gained international attention as the voice of Paddington Bear in the Ukrainian versions of the films Paddington (2014) and Paddington 2 (2017), earning global recognition. Yes, Zelensky is an award-winning, influential entertainer of Ukraine Zelensky returned as artistic director of Kvartal 95 from 2013 to 2019, producing content and performing. He also founded the NGO The League of Laughter and produced 10 feature films. He won more than 30 Teletriumph National Television Awards during this period. Also story: What exactly happened in Trump-Zelensky meeting? Know in 6 points Is it fair to target Zelensky for having been an entertainer?

It's NOT AI-generated: Zelensky's dances in high heels, latex pants being misused on social media to tarnish him. He had a strong past in showbiz

About The Bengal Files

The film, earlier titled The Delhi Files, explores the communal violence that erupted in Bengal during the 1940s, focusing on the Great Calcutta Killings (Direct Action Day) and the Noakhali riots. The Calcutta riots of August 16, 1946, were triggered by the All-India Muslim League's call for Direct Action Day to demand a separate Muslim state post the exit of the British from India. The demand led to widespread unrest and violence in Bengal, and the Hindu population in Calcutta (now Kolkata) was targeted in particular. The communal riots that lasted four days claimed up to 10,000 lives, leaving thousands injured.

Agnihotri’s film The Bengal Files is scheduled to release in theatres on September 5, 2025.

The Bengal Files, directed by Vivek Agnihotri, has been courting controversy days ahead of its theatrical release. Amid raging controversy around the film's content, two actors- Saswata Chatterjee and Sourav Das- have distanced themselves from the film.

Filmmaker Vivel Agnihotri’s new film The Bengal Files has found itself in the centre of controversy days before its theatrical release. Agnihotri’s film is part of his Files trilogy- the final film after Tashkent Files and The Kashmir Files. Based on the Calcutta Riots that took place on August 16, 1946, the makers of the film have been accused of distorting historical facts and misrepresentation of historical characters. The film, which stars Pallavi Joshi, Mithun Chakraborty, Saswata Chatterjee, Anupam Kher and Sourav Das among others, has hit headlines more for its controversial content than the film itself. The controversy began, first, during the trailer launch event in Kolkata and then kin of Gopal Mukherjee, on whom the character of Gopal Patha is based in the film- sent a legal notice over misrepresentation of the Bengali leader. To top it now, two Bengali actors- who play key roles in the film- have no distanced themselves from the controversy, alleging that they were not given the full script but only their character sketch. The Bengal Files Controversy It all began when the team decided to launch the film's trailer on August 16 in Kolkata. The launch event, however, was halted according to the team. While producer Pallavi Joshi and director Vivek Agnihotri criticised the West Bengal government, and Kolkata Police alleged that the event did not have permission to screen the trailer. Sources close to the Kolkata Police told NDTV that the director had not sought any administrative permission for the public viewing of the trailer of his upcoming film. Pallavi Joshi, who stars and has produced the film, described the action by the state government as "unconstitutional". The trailer launch did take place ultimately but after hours of confusion, chaos and delay. Meanwhile, Shantanu Mukherjee, the grandson of Gopal Mukherjee, has filed an FIR and sent a legal notice to Agnihotri for misrepresenting his grandfather in the film. The character Gopal Patha, as shown in the trailer, is based on Gopal Mukherjee, who was a well-known Bengal fighter. His grandson Shantanuhas asserted that his grandfather was not a butcher by profession, but rather a wrestler and a key figure in the Anushilan Samiti, who played a crucial role in preventing Muslim League riots in 1946. In the film’s trailer, Gopal Patha is introduced as a butcher. The character is played by Bengali actor Sourav Das. Shantanu has sent a legal notice to the director, demanding an apology for the alleged distortion of his grandfather's character. He claims that the film's portrayal is not only inaccurate but also hurtful to the family and the community. TMC criticises Vivek Agnihotri Trinamool Congress leader Kunal Ghosh criticised Agnihotri and his film and alleged that it is divisive in nature. “Vivek Agnihotri is doing drama. As a filmmaker, what he makes is politically motivated and intended to divide people,” Kunal Ghosh said at a press conference. The TMC leader questioned why Agnihotri had not made films on incidents in BJP-led states. “Why hasn’t he made The Gujarat Files, highlighting the riots and the story of Bilkis Bano? Why no UP Files, MP Files or Manipur Files? He has come to Bengal only to serve the BJP’s agenda and malign the state,” Ghosh added. TMC is the ruling party in West Bengal. The two actors seem to be keen to disassociate from the controversy, which has Vivek Agnihotri on one side and the TMC-led West Bengal government on the other. On Monday, during a press conference, Joshi and Agnihotri called the TMC-led government ‘fascist’. "What happened that day was not merely an assault on the film, but an assault on democracy itself.
