Kunal Kemmu's Vibe is out in theatres and is doing outstandingly well at the box office. This time, Kemmu wears three hats- director, writer, and actor- and delivers one of the most entertaining films of the year.

After the film's release, WION caught up with him to talk about its success, his journey behind the camera, and the stories behind some of its funniest moments. He was also asked about Hardik's striking look in the film, particularly the orange jacket and shiny goggles seen in the posters.

When asked about the striking look of his character, Hardik, Kemmu, went on to share the interesting story behind the look. Revealing that it was never part of the script while he was writing it and was instead the idea of costume designer Rick Roy.

Kunal Kemmu decodes viral look in Vibe: 'That costume didn't exist

The orange furry jacket was never part of the script when he was writing it, and he gives all credit for it to Roy. For those who haven't watched the movie, Kunal plays Hardik, a good-for-nothing guy who is constantly protected by his friend Bugs, the smart engineer played by Sparsh Shrivastava. In one sequence of the movie, he appears sitting on a couch in that striking look that totally shifts the vibe.

''When I had written the script, that costume didn't exist. I didn't know he [Hardik] would be wearing stuff like this. But when Rick Roy came on board, he's a very vibrant personality himself; he's a vibe himself. He showed me this look and said, 'I know this is not going in the film, but this should be the vibe.' And I was like, one second, why will it not go in the film? I'll find a place for it,'' he said.

''Even the goggles, they are his personal ones. Right till the time we actually shot that scene, I said, 'keep them handy. These are too loud, I don't think these will work, but keep them handy.' But when we were shooting it, it just made sense. When I put them on, I realised you can't see properly. I thought it would be fun for Hardik to see a prism image of him (Bugs) when he walks in. So right till we shot it, we weren't sure if we were going to use those, but then that became the look,'' the actor shares.

Vibe: What is the movie about?

The movie follows how Hardik and Bugs, the two boys, who can't even handle their lives properly, become agents tasked with saving India, and their misadventures make for the rest of the hilarious ride. The movie also stars debutant Vanshika Dhir and Preity Zinta, who plays the role of Madame H.

Released on Sept 18, the movie is on Day 9 and is currently running across 289 shows and has collected a net of ₹0.43 Cr Live today, as per Sacnilk. That contrast gives the story its comic energy. Kunal Kemmu's role as actor and director leans into his strength for situational humour and self-aware comedy. The friendship between Hardik and Bugs gives the film an emotional and comic centre instead of making it only about the action. In an exclusive chat with WION, Kunal Kemmu revealed the story behind his viral orange jacket and goggles look in Vibe, saying it was never in the script and came from costume designer Rick Roy. The movie is playing in theatres.

Kunal Kemmu decodes viral look in Vibe: 'That costume didn't exist The orange furry jacket was never part of the script when he was writing it, and he gives all credit for it to Roy.

Ranbir Kapoor's first look

Ranbir Kapoor was the first among the trio to get his character poster. Unveiled on Thursday by Bhansali Productions on Instagram, it showed him driving a vintage car in a white T-shirt and glasses, sporting a short buzz cut. What caught everyone's eye was his bloodied hand.

But instead of using these elements effectively, the film keeps adding more ideas, characters and subplots until it becomes exhausting to watch."

Also Read: The Paradise: Nani-Srikanth Odela's action thriller delayed?

It further states, "Nani has given his all to the role, while Mohan Babu also makes his character, Maalik, intimidating. However, the screenplay ends up undermining many of these strengths. While the film makes you believe that something powerful is cooking, the story keeps getting stretched. If you are planning to watch The Paradise, only go for the good performances, striking visuals, and Nani, as the writing makes sitting through the film feel much longer than it actually is."

About The Paradise

The Paradise is a Telugu period action thriller directed by Srikanth Odela and starring Natural Star Nani. Alongside Nani, the film also features Mohan Babu as Shikanja Maalik, Raghav Juyal as Vikram Maalik, Kayadu Lohar as Subbalakshmi, and other cast members, including Sonali Kulkarni, Easwari Rao, Sampoornesh Babu, and Keerthy Suresh in a special appearance.

The storyline depicts a tribal community's violent and emotional fight for basic rights, recognition, and identity against feudal oppression.

Facing a ticking clock due to his failing heart and lack of rescue, James and Odin battle freezing terrain, a grizzly bear, a wolf pack, and a dangerous river sweep. How the duo push through the standard wilderness survival and the mutual dependence form the main crux of the story.

Also Read: The Paradise BO collection: Nani starrer makes a strong start on day 1

What works?

Brad Pitt, as always, has shown his acting and versatality. His performance is largely built around restraint, physicality and small expressions, which suits a character accustomed to operating without much emotional display. Apart from Brad Pitt, his co-star, the German Shepherd communicates through movement, looks and reactions rather than dialogue or exaggerated human-like behaviour. That makes the relationship between James and Odin feel surprisingly natural.

The film's strongest scenes aren't necessarily the ones involving bears, wolves or dangerous terrain. Its quieter moments, when James and Odin simply depend on one another, give the survival story its emotional meaning.

What does not work?

The film throws one obstacle after another at its protagonists. While this maintains momentum, the repeated cycle of danger, escape and another danger can eventually become predictable. The central idea, a tough veteran and his loyal dog facing nature together, isn't particularly unfamiliar. The film doesn't completely reinvent the survival genre; instead, it relies on the execution and the relationship between its two central characters.

Final verdict

Heart of the Beast may not reinvent the survival genre, but it doesn't need to. Instead, its biggest strength is the simple relationship between a human being and a dog. Brad Pitt brings maturity and restraint to James, while Odin provides the warmth and emotional expression that keeps the journey engaging.

Also Read: Park Ji Hyun makes history with first Korean actress International Emmy nod

Some repetitive obstacles and exaggerated survival moments hold it back from being a completely seamless thriller, but the emotional connection between James and Odin makes the journey worthwhile. Overall, Heart of the Beast is a gripping and heartfelt survival drama because Brad Pitt was part of it, plus his bond with his four-legged companion made it better.

Facing several battles together, the duo carry physical and emotional scars, including PTSD nightmares, with Odin walking with the help of a prosthetic leg and titanium teeth. However, things take a drastic turn when they were flying back amid the changing weather, James suffers a sudden heart attack, causing the plane to lose control and crash into the water. After the sudden hit, James manages to survive and rescue his stunned canine companion. Facing a ticking clock due to his failing heart and lack of rescue, James and Odin battle freezing terrain, a grizzly bear, a wolf pack, and a dangerous river sweep. How the duo push through the standard wilderness survival and the mutual dependence form the main crux of the story. Also Read: The Paradise BO collection: Nani starrer makes a strong start on day 1 What works? Final verdict Heart of the Beast may not reinvent the survival genre, but it doesn't need to. Instead, its biggest strength is the simple relationship between a human being and a dog. Brad Pitt brings maturity and restraint to James, while Odin provides the warmth and emotional expression that keeps the journey engaging. Overall, Heart of the Beast is a gripping and heartfelt survival drama because Brad Pitt was part of it, plus his bond with his four-legged companion made it better.

Oh God, please forgive them! This is the first thought that comes to mind after watching Sidharth Malhotra's The Vvann: Force of the Forrest, which is backed by Ekta Kapoor. For context, in Indian cinema, religion and its gods have always played a very crucial role, to the point that films like Jai Santoshi Maa, which has popularised the goddess to an unimaginable extent. And, for a long time, even now, Indian audiences have been enjoying it, with movies heavily relying on faith, folklore and mythological stories.

In this film, things have surely gone out of hand, with every scene, dialogue, and song seemingly around religion, as if you are watching an extended version of Gulshan Kumar's 90s video of a devotional song. But the only difference here is the impressive camerawork, which is complimented with a team of good-looking actors.

The Vvaan: Story lost in its own jungle

Like any other film, the movie opens with a heroic scene featuring Sidharth Malhotra, who plays Rishi, showing off his skills as he saves a child and a group of workers from a JCB that has malfunctioned. And as expected, our hero saves them.

Still from Vvaan

Then the music plays, and in a heroic moment, water splashes on the Shivling. So, yeah, that was the entry we got to see, followed by a beautiful, truly soothing song with the sweet and lovely couple (Malhotra as Rishi and Tamannaah Bhatia as Mamta) dancing, and after this warm-up, the movie actually begins.

Rishi and Mamta are living in Mumbai, and there only dream is to have a child. To solve a property matter and also to celebrate Chhath, the couple goes back to their town, Devanchal, where there is a forest called Dev Van, and a goddess called Vann Devi, who is protecting the village from bad omens and demons. Atheist Rishi returns to his village and is quick to question the villagers and their belief in superstitions, which has become a hindrance to development, as their only fear is supernatural forces. How Rishi breaks this centuries-old curse of the jungle forms the rest of the story.

Vvann: It's Ekta Kapoor's world on the big screen.

From the very first frame, the over-fictionalised setting of the film feels artificial, with the sets looking staged and unrealistic. Despite this, the beginning starts on a promising note, before things only get worse. Stories around forest legends and their folklore have time and again inspired films that have impressed viewers, but director Deepak Kumar Mishra’s take on the theme feels distant and is mostly overburdened by dramatisation of religion, beliefs, and stories, to the point that it felt like I was watching Ekta Kapoor’s famous hit show Naagin, or even Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. The two-hour-long film has several scenes that give you déjà vu of daily soaps, whether it's Shweta Tiwari's shouting sequence in the hospital, the Chhath festival sequence, or even the climax where Rishi stops his wife from participating in the fast. Then there's Tamannaah's monologue, followed by yet another festival sequence where the heroine drowns, and the hero saves her. All these inputs seem like they have come directly from Kapoor's world of daily soaps.

The narration feels like a cut-and-paste of many past films. At one point, I felt I was watching Rishab Shetty’s Kantara; the very next moment, I was in S.S. Rajamouli’s RRR or Baahubali universe, with a pinch of Kajol’s Maa thrown in and also Stree, and there are a few other names I am definitely forgetting. In the film, there is a scene, where Rishi, who is an atheist, walks in front of the goddess’s temple, a very Deewaar-coded moment (that scene is iconic in Indian cinema). Amid all the comical dialogues and scenes, the only part I enjoyed was Paul as Ved. Suniel Grover's turn as the villain looks promising, until he gets those spidey-like black eyes.

With the amount of money invested in the film, the camera work and production design make the movie look grand and visually polished. The scale is evident on screen, and technically, the film creates moments of spectacle that briefly lift the otherwise wafer-thin narrative. In the first half, the combination of mythology with folklore genuinely excites the curious viewer. But soon, as the layers of the story start to unravel, all that remains is melodrama. Malhotra truly carries the film with his performance and does everything he possibly could for it, and so do the other actors. Tamannaah brings her charm, but her role is limited so she don't have much to serve.

To put it briefly, Vvaan is very much set in Ekta Kapoor's Tulsi Virani-style world, where Sidharth makes his debut as the divine hero. But he fails to carry the film on charm alone.

Sidharth Malhotra and Tamannaah Bhatia shoulder the responsibility of saving the world of The Vvaan, which impresses with its presentation despite a plot heavily inspired by Ekta Kapoor's TV universe.
