On Wednesday (Aug 8), Rohit Sharma-led India lost the third and final ODI versus hosts Sri Lanka, at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, to lose the three-match series 2-0. Failing to win the series opener, which was eventually tied, India lost the second and penultimate encounter by 32 runs before being hammered by Charith Asalanka-led Islanders by 110 runs in the final match, in pursuit of 249.
After the defeat, a lot of questions were asked about Rohit & Co., who conceded their first-ever ODI bilateral series to Sri Lanka since 1997. The 2023 ODI World Cup runners-up were convincingly beaten in the final game, with their bowlers once again conceding a bit to run before the Indian batters fell flat against SL spinners.
At the post-match presentation ceremony, Rohit was asked if the No. 1 ranked Indian team were complacent against the seventh-ranked Sri Lankans. To this, Hitman said,"It is a joke, when you are playing for India there is never going to be complacency. When I am captain there is no chance of that. But you have to give credit to good cricket. Sri Lanka played better than us."
He further added, "These things happen, series loss is not the end of the world, you will lose an odd series here and there but it is about how you come back after the loss."
Rohit lauded SL for being top of India in all three games. The home side rode onJeffrey Vandersay, Dunith Wellalage and skipper Asalanka'sspin web to dent India. The trio shared 21 wickets between them whereas Avishka Fernando top-scored for the Lankans in the series, with 137 runs. Wellalage ended as the Player-of-the-Series for his all-round blitz, also making 108 runs (third-most).
For India, only Rohit stood tall with the bat; top-scoring with 157 runs whereas all the other batters remained clueless throughout (barring some resistance from Axar Patel). Among the bowlers, Washington Sundar made a mark with 5 wickets whereas Kuldeep Yadav returned with 4 scalps.
