Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL), a subsidiary of the Tata Group, has announced the successful deployment of over 850 charging points for electric buses across key metropolitan areas in India. This initiative marks a significant step towards promoting sustainable transportation and reducing the carbon footprint of the country's public transit system.
The charging points have been installed in more than 30 bus depots located in major cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Jammu, Srinagar, Dharwad, Lucknow, and Goa. By providing a robust charging infrastructure, TPREL aims to support the adoption of electric buses and contribute to the overall goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the transportation sector.
The impact of this extensive charging network has been substantial, with the company reporting the prevention of more than 1 lakh tonnes of tailpipe CO2 emissions. This achievement highlights the environmental benefits of transitioning to electric vehicles and foregrounds the importance of developing a comprehensive charging infrastructure to support this shift.
TPREL's charging infrastructure features high-capacity fast chargers with a power output ranging from 180 to 240 kilowatts (KW). These advanced chargers enable rapid charging of electric buses, with an average charging time of just 1 to 1.5 hours. The quick turnaround time ensures that buses can be efficiently charged and deployed back into service, minimising downtime and optimising their operational efficiency.
Among the cities benefiting from Tata Power's EV charging points, Delhi has emerged as a leader in e-bus adoption, closely followed by Mumbai, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, Jammu, and Srinagar. The availability of reliable charging infrastructure has been instrumental in facilitating the transition to electric buses in these cities, showcasing the positive impact of TPREL's efforts.
TPREL's commitment to promoting e-mobility extends beyond the installation of charging points. The company offers end-to-end solutions for charging infrastructure development, encompassing the execution of operation and maintenance (O&M) services. By providing comprehensive support, TPREL aims to ensure the smooth functioning and long-term sustainability of the e-bus charging network.
In addition to collaborating with state governments' transport corporations, TPREL is actively fostering synergies with various Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) operators. These partnerships are crucial in driving the widespread adoption of electric vehicles and creating a robust ecosystem for sustainable transportation.
