Mercedes pulled the wraps off the first model of its highly exclusive Mythos Series in the form of the Mercedes‑AMG PureSpeed Concept. The global debut took place in Monaco on the sidelines of the upcoming F1 race weekend, in the presence of Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team racing drivers Lewis Hamilton and George Russell. According to Mercedes, the “completely open, two-seater performance car without a roof or windscreen is a tribute to motor racing.”

Though Mercedes did not mention this anywhere, the PureSpeed Concept is essentially an SL convertible (most probably the SL 63) with a bespoke treatment inspired by F1, the Mercedes-AMG One hypercar, and the brand’s iconic vintage race cars like the 300 SLR.

Since it has no roof, windscreen, or side windows, the PureSpeed Concept features a Halo system instead of A-pillars, much like the one we see on modern-day F1 cars. The idea here is to recreate the experience of driving an F1 car for two passengers. Included with the vehicle are two aerodynamically optimised helmets specially designed and manufactured for the PureSpeed Concept.

Design-wise, the PureSpeed Concept takes plenty of inspiration from the Mercedes-AMG One hypercar. For example, the exposed carbon fibre bits in the lower section of the vehicle, the open front wheel covers and closed rear wheel covers, the long bonnet and the very low front end with a pronounced “shark nose”, a wide lower air intake with AMG lettering and a dark, chrome-plated Mercedes star on the soft nose hark back to the design of the AMG One.

The two flying buttresses behind the seats are a reminder of the legendary 300 SLR, which won the 1955 Mille Miglia in Italy, piloted by Sir Stirling Moss and Denis Jenkinson. The Le Mans Red to Graphite Grey with a black AMG pattern colour scheme alludes to the Mercedes race car that won the 1924 Targa Florio.

Being the first model in the highly exclusive Mythos series, Mercedes will only create 250 examples of the PureSpeed Concept, and the series “will only be available to the most dedicated Mercedes‑Benz enthusiasts and collectors.”
