Amid tensions with Russia, US President Joe Biden said that "if Russia invades then there will be no longer a Nord Stream 2."

The US president was speaking during a joint news conference with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz who backed the idea of blocking the pipeline.

"We are acting together. We are absolutely united and we will not be taking different steps," the German Chancellor said.

Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin said he was ready for a compromise after his talks with French President Emmanuel Macron.

"A number of his ideas, proposals are possible as a basis for further steps," the Russian president said, adding, "We will do everything to find compromises that suit everyone."

President Macron is set to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv on Tuesday amid hectic diplomatic activity to prevent an invasion which the US has warned would have disastrous consequences for Russia.

President Biden said Russia has to adhere to "long-standing principles of rules-based international order" as he asserted that Germany and the US have been working closely to find "diplomatic resolutions" to tensions between Russia and Ukraine.

The US has warned Russia is ready to invade Ukraine with over 100,000 troops massed at the border, however, Russian President Putin has repeatedly said his regime has no invasion plans while pointing out that Russian troops have the right to move around anywhere inside the country's territory.

President Biden emphasised that talks with Russia will continue in "good faith" as Germany pushes for de-escalation of tension and ensure dialogue under the Normandy format as both the German Chancellor and the US president hoped for a diplomatic solution to the crisis.

"But if Russia makes a choice to further invade Ukraine, we are jointly ready and all of NATO is ready," President Biden warned.
