Two Delta planes collided at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in Georgia

An investigation has been launched after a Delta Airline plane collided with Endeavor Air flight (a subsidiary of Delta) on the runway at theHartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in Georgia.

Delta Air Lines Flight 295, bound for Tokyo with 221 passengers was taxiing for departure shortly after 10 am local time on Monday (Sep 10) when the incident took place. According to theFederal Aviation Administration (FAA), the wingtip of the Delta place struck the tail ofEndeavor Air Flight 5526, which was bound forLafayette, Louisiana.

Both the planes were on alternate taxiways when the collision happened, according to the airliner.

"While Delta Air Lines Flight 295 was taxiing for departure at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, its wingtip struck the tail of Endeavor Air Flight 5526. The Delta Airbus A350 was headed to Tokyo. The Endeavor Bombardier CRJ900 was headed to Lafayette, Louisiana," the FAA said in a statement.

Invetsigation launched

Fortunately, nobody was injured in the collision and the Intercontinental flight was able to taxi to the airport concourse on its own as the passengers deplaned at the gate. Meanwhile, the passengers on the regional flight were taken back to the terminal by bus.

Photos and videos going viral on social media showed the tail of theEndeavor flight separated from the plane.

"Was someone on their phone? Or are they that untrained?" one user said commenting on the incident, while another added: "That’s quite a shocking incident. I hope everyone involved is safe and that the investigation sheds light on how this happened."

A third commented: "Human error or the ground collision avoidance system malfunctioned?"

The FAA said it will investigate the incident. The National Transportation Safety Board added that it will also conduct an investigation.
