The latest tally suggests that this is the eighth day in which the daily coronavirus deaths in the country have been fewer than 1,000.

However, nearly 20 states in the country are seeing a surge in coronavirus cases as the epicentre has now moved from New York and the country's Northeast to the South and West.

But the country's top infectious expert, Anthony Fauci on Thursday said that lockdown would not be necessary on states which are reporting a large number of cases.

"I don't think we're going to be talking about going back to lockdown," Anthony Fauci of the National Institutes of Health, said.

"I think we're going to be talking about trying to better control those areas of the country that seem to be having a surge of cases."
