Ukraine war: Over 4,000 evacuated from Kharkiv after Russia claimed to capture five villages

More than 4,000 people were evacuated from border areasin Ukraine's northeastern Kharkiv region on Sunday (May 12),the local governor said. In a post on social media, Governor Oleg Synegubovsaid, "In total, 4,073 people havebeen evacuated."

Synegubov further saidthat on Sunday, a 63-year-old manwas killedby artillery fire in the village of Glybokeanda 38-year-old manwas woundedin Vovchansk, a border town with some 3,000 residents before the current offensive.

This mass evacuation came afterRussian forces claimed the capture of five villages in Kharkiv as it launched asurprise cross-border offensive in the region on Friday.

Earlier,the Russian defence ministry said thatMoscow's forces had taken theKharkiv villages of Pletenivka, Ohirtseve, Borysivka, Pylna, and Strilecha across the border from Russia's Belgorod region, the news agency Reuters reported.

'Ukraine carrying outcounterattacks in Kharkiv villages'

On Saturday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that the militaryhad been carrying out counterattacks in border villages inKharkiv."Disrupting Russian offensive plans is now our number one task," President Zelensky said.

He insisted that troops must "return the initiative to Ukraine", again urging allies to speed up arms deliveries.

In other news from the war,Belgorod's governorVyacheslavGladkovsaidlate Saturday thatone womanwas killed, 29 people were woundedandseveral hundred flatswere damagedby Ukraine's continuous attacks over the weekend.

"The city of Belgorod and Belgorod region were subjected to massive shelling by Ukrainian armed forces,"Gladkov said in a post on Telegram.

Hours later, the Russian defence ministry said that its air defence forces had destroyed two Soviet-era conventional ballistic missiles launched overnight by Ukrainian forces over Belgorod.
