<p>This mass evacuation came after&nbsp;Russian forces claimed the capture of five villages in Kharkiv as it launched a&nbsp;surprise cross-border offensive in the region on Friday.</p>

<p>Earlier,&nbsp;the Russian defence ministry said that&nbsp;Moscow's forces had taken the&nbsp;Kharkiv villages of Pletenivka, Ohirtseve, Borysivka, Pylna, and Strilecha across the border from Russia's Belgorod region, the news agency Reuters reported.&nbsp;</p>

<p>On Saturday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that the military&nbsp;had been carrying out counterattacks in border villages in&nbsp;Kharkiv.&nbsp;"Disrupting Russian offensive plans is now our number one task," President Zelensky said.</p>

<p>"The city of Belgorod and Belgorod region were subjected to massive shelling by Ukrainian armed forces,"&nbsp;Gladkov said in a post on Telegram.&nbsp;</p>
