Ukraine launches drone attack on Russia’s third biggest oil refinery 800 miles from front lines

Ukraine on Tuesday (Apr 2) claimed to have launched a drone attack on Russia's third largest oil refinery, which is about 1,300 km from the front lines. The drone reportedly hit a core unit which processes about 155,000 barrels of crude refining per day.
Images from the scene indicated the drone hit the primary refining unit, CDU-7, at the Taneco refinery. The unit is apparently responsible for around half of the plant's total annual production capacity.
A Kyiv intelligence source told the news agency Reuters that the attack on Tatarstan hit a facility where Russia produces Shahed drones, which are frequently used in assaults on Ukrainian territory. Ukraine's military spy agency claimed earlier that "significant damage" had been caused to a military target.
A Reuters report cited Russian officials as saying that its jamming devices locked onto a Ukrainian drone near Tatneft's Taneco refinery, which has an annual production capacity of more than 17 million tonnes (340,000 barrels per day).
The state RIA news agency said that a fire broke out at the refinery that was extinguished within 20 minutes. It added that the production had not been disrupted. So far, there are no reports of casualties.

"A drone attack was carried out on one of the enterprises in Nizhnekamsk. There are no casualties or serious damage. The technological process of the enterprise has not been disrupted," Ramil Mullin, the mayor of Nizhnekamsk, said.

In recent times, Ukraine has started to target the oil refineries of Russia, which is the world's second-largest oil exporter. Such attacks have the potential to impact Moscow's highly lucrative trade in refined products.
The United States also raised concerns over such attacks on Russian refineries as it may lead to the potential for escalation with Russia in the ongoing war.
