Ukraine on Tuesday (Apr 2) claimed to have launched a drone attack on Russia's third largest oil refinery, which is about 1,300 km from the front lines. The drone reportedly hit a core unit which processes about 155,000 barrels of crude refining per day.&nbsp;

Images from the scene indicated the drone hit the primary refining unit, CDU-7, at the Taneco refinery. The unit is apparently responsible for around half of the plant's total annual production capacity.&nbsp;

A Kyiv intelligence source told the news agency Reuters that the attack on Tatarstan hit a facility where Russia produces Shahed drones, which are frequently used in assaults on Ukrainian territory. Ukraine's military spy agency claimed earlier that "significant damage" had been caused to a military target.&nbsp;

A Reuters report cited Russian officials as saying that its jamming devices locked onto a Ukrainian drone near Tatneft's Taneco refinery, which has an annual production capacity of more than 17 million tonnes (340,000 barrels per day).&nbsp;

The state RIA news agency said that a fire broke out at the refinery that was extinguished within 20 minutes. It added that the production had not been disrupted. So far, there are no reports of casualties.&nbsp;

"A drone attack was carried out on one of the enterprises in Nizhnekamsk. There are no casualties or serious damage. The technological process of the enterprise has not been disrupted," Ramil Mullin, the mayor of Nizhnekamsk, said.&nbsp;

Ukraine launches drone attack on Russia’s third biggest oil refinery 800 miles from front lines

The Ukrainian military launched 35 drones against broad areas of Russia, sparking a brief fire at an oil refinery, targeting Moscow, and disrupting electricity in border areas, Russian officials said early Sunday (Mar 17). In a post on Telegram, the Russian defence ministry said that 17 drones were destroyed over the Krasnodar region, four over the Moscow region, and the rest over six other regions.

According to the operational headquarters of Krasnodar, the drones were neutralised but a fire broke out as a result of the fall of one of the devices. The fire at the Slavyansk refinery in Krasnodar was extinguished and there were no casualties, a report by the news agency Reuters said.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said there were no casualties or damage reported from the drones shot down over three districts near Moscow. North of Moscow four drones were destroyed over the Yaroslavl region, with no damage or injuries reported, Yaroslavl's Governor Mikhail Yevrayev said. &nbsp;

In Belgorod, an attack by four Ukraine-launched drones damaged electricity and gas lines in one village, according to Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov.

In his nightly video address on Saturday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky thanked the military for new "long-range capabilities" but did not mention the reported attacks.

The attacks came as Russia was holding its third and final day of presidential elections. Russia has been accusing Ukraine of using air attacks to try to sabotage the polls.&nbsp;

On Friday, Russian President Vladimir Putin accused Ukraine of trying to disrupt the polls with its intensified drone and missile attacks inside Russia and on Moscow-held territory in Ukraine.
