UK: Police arrest elderly prisoner who escaped during treatment at London hospital
Graham Gomm, 63, had escaped from a London hospital
An elderly UKprisoner who escaped from a London hospitalhas been found and arrested on Saturday (Jul 20), the Metropolitan police confirmed.
Graham Gomm, 63, was on remand forburglary offencesbut managed to escape fromHammersmith Hospital after being taken there by the prison staff on Thursday (Jul 18) after falling sick.
“Police officers from across the Met worked together after being alerted to Graham Gomm’s escape on 18 July. As a result of a proactive operation, officers arrested Gomm in Putney at about 8.30 am on 20 July," said the Met police.
“An investigation will continue into Mr Gomm escaping lawful custody.”
The police were alerted about Gomm's escape just after midnight on Thursday. He was wearing a grey t-shirt and a similar coloured tracksuit during the escape as the manhunt was launched.
Officers started by carrying out door-to-door searches in the neighbourhood before peering through the CCTV footage.

At the time, the Met released a statement, showing concern about Gomm's well-being.
“Detectives are also concerned for Gomm’s welfare as he was undergoing medical care before he escaped. There is nothing to suggest that Gomm is a threat to the public.”

Overcrowded UK prisons
According to reports, prisons in the United Kingdomare filled to the brim, leading to major handling challenges in front of the authorities.
Reports indicate that as of July 12, there were 87,500 inmates at the 1,451 prison facilities - suggesting a 98 per cent capacity, with fewer than 1,500 spots left.
In England and Wales, those handed jail sentences have traditionally spent 50 per centof their sentence behind bars before being released on licence, subject to certain conditions.

The newly-formed Labour government recently announced plans to release those who have served 40 per cent of their sentences for specific types of crimes.
