Rishi Sunak: Political Career

In October 2014, Rishi Sunak was selected as the Conservative candidate for Richmond (Yorks). He was elected as an MP for the constituency in the 2015 UK General Elections. He was re-elected in 2017.

He went on to serve in a junior ministerial position — Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Local Government — in Theresa May's second government. Sunak was selected for the task in the 2018 cabinet reshuffle. May resigned in early 2019.

Sunak was then appointed chief secretary to the Treasury by the next Prime Minister, Boris Johnson. He served under Chancellor Sajid Javid and also became a member of the Privy Council.

In February 2020, Boris Johnson's first cabinet shuffle happened and Sunak became the chancellor after Javid resigned.

After a series of damning scandals the government faced during the Covid-19 pandemic, on 5 July 2022, Sunak resigned. He was succeeded as chancellor by Nadhim Zahawi.

Soon after, on 8 July 2022, he announced his bid to replace Boris Johnson as party leader. He lost this bid and Liz Truss became the PM, however, her premiership didn't even last two months (6 September 2022–25 October 2022).

Finally, on 24 October 2022, Rishi Sunak emerged as the leader of the majority party in the House of Commons. He was appointed the PM by Prince Charles III (now King) on 25 October 2022.

Rishi Sunak: Controversies and Scandals

Sunak's time in the office had a rough start. When he became PM, he inherited a crisis-stricken economy from his predecessor, Liz Truss. He was Britain's fifth prime minister in eight years.

His tenure is marked by several controversies, including a betting scandal involving party officials and criticismover his absence at a D-Day memorial event.

As per Reuters, the Tory leader is also under fire over many issues that the right wingparty feels he has done little to resolve. These include stopping migrant arrivals across the Channel, cutting taxes significantly, and challenging what they see as a "woke" agenda in public life.
