Story highlights

Leaked audio reportedly captures US Vice-President JD Vance mocking Canadian PM Mark Carney over trade negotiations. Carney said Canada rejected an unfair US deal and vowed retaliatory tariffs, while Donald Trump renewed his 51st-state jibe and criticised Canada.

US President Donald Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney have traded sharp accusations over stalled trade negotiations, with Trump renewing his “51st state” jibe and accusing Canada of seeking benefits without becoming a US state. Carney, meanwhile, called the proposed US terms “uneconomic” and “unfair”, saying Ottawa would retaliate with matching tariffs.

This comes at the backdrop of leaked audio of US Vice President JD Vance from a private event in which he reportedly mocked Canada's Carney for trying to “out-tough” US President Trump. According to the Canadian Press, Vance is heard in the audio telling a room of supporters in Southampton, New York, that Carney is a “very sweet guy” and that he gets along with him well. But he also says Carney “comes in and puffs his chest out and says: ‘I’m going to, like, out-tough Donald Trump.’ Vance adds: “It’s hilarious because Carney presents this as some victory for Canada when fundamentally, like, they climb down on a lot of issues.”

What Carney said?

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Saturday (Aug 22)said that he walked away because of a 'bad trade deal' and vowed to slap retaliatory tariffs on the US. Carney claimed that the US proposed new terms that were "uneconomic" and "unfair" and said that they undermined the net benefits for Canada. He accused US President Donald Trump of launching a trade "war" and said, “You're at war when you get attacked. We got attacked.” "We cannot accept what they've offered, and we will not give what they've asked," Carney said. Carney stated that Ottawa will respond with a "dollar for dollar" move to match the 50 per cent tariff imposed by Trump.
