Story highlights

At the Gaza Peace Summit, Trump mistakenly called Canadian PM Mark Carney the “President” of Canada. Carney joked back, and Trump turned it into a witty dig at former PM Trudeau, recalling past jokes about Canada as the 51st US state.

US President Donald Trump made yet another gaffe during Gaza Peace Summit in Gaza. This time he called Canada PM Mark Carney ‘President’ of the country. Canada has a parliamentary system and Prime Minister is the head of the government. In a hilarious hot-mic moment after the US president's address, Carney confronted him and pointed out his mistake. Trump smartly turned his mistake into a witty reply in what is being seen as a dig at Carney's predecessor Justin Trudeau. World leaders gathered at Egypt’s coastal resort area of Sharm el-Sheikh on Monday (Oct 10) for a ceremony to sign the peace deal between Israel and Hamas. The event turned into an endorsement of sorts for the US president as world leaders praised him from the podium as he stood beside them clapping, cheering and looking on.

During his address, Trump referred to Canada and said, "The president called me" and "They fully understood the importance of this agreement." Trump did not immediately realise his mistake. After his speech, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney shook hands with him and joked, "Thanks for upgrading me to president." Trump immediately realised his mistake, then smiled, and patted Carney’s left shoulder, saying, "Oh, did I say that?" He then wittily turned his embarrassment into a dig at Trudeau by saying, "At least I didn’t call you a governor."

Did Trump mock Trudeau?

Earlier in December 2024, when Justin Truudueau was the Prime Minister of Canada, Trump, who was then the President-elect, has referred to him as Governor. He has cropped up the idea of Canada being the 51 US State since the time he has came to power for the second time. However, his latest meeting with Carney went smoothly, despite Trump joking about the 51st state. In Dec 2024, Trrump in a post on Truth Social said, "It was a pleasure to have dinner the other night with Governor Justin Trudeau of the Great State of Canada." "I look forward to seeing the Governor again soon so that we may continue our in depth talks on Tariffs and Trade, the results of which will be truly spectacular for all! DJT," Trump added in his post.
