Strong 6.7-magnitude earthquake strikes central Indonesia

A strong 6.7-magnitude earthquake struck central Indonesia's Sulawesi province on Tuesday (June 16) at 10:27 am local time, according to the US Geological Survey. The shallow tremor was centred east-southeast of the city of Palu. The initial assessments indicate that the seismic event caused no immediate casualties or structural damage to the region.

The quake has strongly shaken the Indonesian regions of Palu and Sigi, though authorities have confirmed it does not pose a tsunami threat. According to Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency, the tremor caused widespread alarm but spared the coastal areas from secondary wave dangers. The panic was deeply felt by local residents, many of whom still carry the trauma of past disasters. Nurhaidar, a 42-year-old resident of Palu, described the terrifying moment the quake struck while she was cooking. While speaking to news agency AFP, she recalled a sudden, violent jolt followed by intense shaking that made her entire roof rattle loudly, sounding as if it were on the verge of collapse. Disoriented and confused, she acted quickly to evacuate her home safely alongside her children.

This latest seismic event serves as another stark reminder of Indonesia’s vulnerable geography. As a vast archipelago in Southeast Asia, the nation sits directly atop the Pacific "Ring of Fire." This expansive arc of intense seismic activity is characterised by colliding tectonic plates, stretching all the way from Japan through Southeast Asia and across the Pacific basin.

It is because of this positioning that the country experiences frequent volcanic and seismic disruptions. The memory of these dangers remains especially vivid in Palu, where a devastating magnitude-7.5 earthquake and a subsequent catastrophic tsunami killed more than 2,200 people in 2018. Despite the intense shaking and anxiety caused by this recent event, no similar disaster materialised.
