The quake hit at about 3 am local time at a depth of 84km, according to Indonesia's geophysics agency&nbsp;Badan Meteorologi, Klimatologi, dan Geofisika (BMKG).

In West Sumatra's capital Padang, the quake was felt strongly. The locals were moved away from the beaches, according to BMKG spokesperson Abdul Muhari, who reportedly himself was in the area.

"People left their homes. Some were panicking but under control. Currently some of them are evacuating away from the sea,"&nbsp;he said.

The footage on Indonesian media channels posted on social media&nbsp;showed some Padang residents evacuating by motorbike and on foot to higher ground.

According to the USGS, &nbsp;latitude and longitude were found to be at 6.420°S and 131.152°E respectively.&nbsp;

The earthquake was&nbsp;at a depth of 95&nbsp;kilometres below the earth's surface, said EMCS. The aftershocks of magnitude 5.5 were recorded, according to&nbsp;Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).

There were no reports of damage or victims but the tremors were felt on the island of Papua, Timor, Maluku archipelago as well as Darwin,&nbsp;capital of Australia's Northern Territory.&nbsp;

An initial Tsunami warning was generated by the Indonesian geophysics agency which was later taken back.&nbsp;

This is not the first time that the Tanimbar islands have endured such an earthquake. Previously, an earthquake&nbsp;measuring&nbsp;7.3 struck the island in June 2019. However, at the time, no Tsunami warning was issued.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Indonesia, owning to its geographical position in the highly seismic 'Ring of Fire' -&nbsp;an area in the basin of the Pacific Ocean is highly susceptible to earthquakes.&nbsp;

In November last year, a shallow 5.6 magnitude earthquake rocked the town of&nbsp;Cianjur in Indonesia's West Java. Despite experts terming it a relatively quieter earthquake, more than 600 people succumbed to the devastation caused by it.&nbsp;

“Once we realised Azka was alive, everybody broke into tears, including me," 28-year-old local volunteer Jeksen told AFP on Thursday.&nbsp;"It was very moving, it felt like a miracle."&nbsp;&nbsp;

&nbsp;Azka is currently being treated at a makeshift hospital, even though his wounds are said to be minimal.&nbsp;

According to experts, Monday’s quake in Cianjur was due to a shift in the Cimandiri fault, one of the large faults in West Java with considerable potential for causing damage.&nbsp;
