As Hollywood battles, a bevvy of sexual harassment charges against some its prominent figures, this new report is bound to raise more eyebrows. Turns out the Duffer brothers, the creators of Netflix's popular show, Stranger Things, 'tricked' child actor Sadie Sink to film an unscripted kiss scene with fellow actor Caleb McLaughlin for an episode in the ongoing second season of Stranger Things.
The last-minute addition in the script came into light during the after-show known as Beyond Stranger Things as the cast along with the creators sat and discussed the episode.
A clip that has surfaced on Youtube shows 15-year-old Sink discussing the scene with the creators while Ross Duffer starts talking about the kiss and says, "all her own fault." Sadie points out that the "kiss was not part of the script." "I get there, the first day of Snowball… one of you, I think it was you Ross, you say, ‘Ooh, Sadie, you ready for the kiss?’ I’m like, ‘What! No! That’s not in the script… that’s not happening," Sadie recalled and added, " So the whole day I was like stressed out, I was like oh my god, wait, am I gonna have to… and it didn’t happen that day, but then the second day of Snow Ball.”
Duffer then explained, “You reacted so strongly to this—I was just joking—and you were so freaked out that I was like well, I gotta make her do it now… that’s why I’m saying it’s your fault.” And no wonder Sink was so “stressed out”; as she goes on to describe, the kiss was filmed in front of a full room of extras, plus “their parents, and the crew, and my mom.”
While many would argue that the kiss appeared quite harmless and innocent, the story behind it should be a point of concern where a child actor narrated how she was under stress thinking about filming an unplanned scene while the Duffer brothers and other co-actors suppressed their giggles and smiled at her.
There has been a lot of discussion around exploitation and of sexual misconduct in Hollywood in the recent past. In October, nearly 60 women came out and spoke about how they were raped, harrassed by producer Harvey Weinstein. Last week, actor Anthony Rapp accused Kevin Spacey of sexual misconduct when Rapp was 14-years old.
