Second Trump assassination attempt: US President Joe Biden says Secret Service ‘needs more help’

United States President Joe Biden said on Monday (Sept 16) that the Secret Service "needs more help" hours after Republican presidential candidate and former president Donald Trump survived a second assassination attempt.

"One thing I want to make clear, the (secret) service needs more help, and I think the Congress should respond to their needs," President Biden told reporters at the White House.

"I think we may need more personnel," Biden added.

Second attempt to assassinate Trump

A gunman attempted to assassinate Republican presidential candidateDonaldTrumpon Sunday atTrump's golf course in Palm Beach, Florida. American media identified the suspect as 58-year-oldRyan Wesley Routh.

The Secret Service said its agents were accompanyingTrumpon the golf course when one who was securing holes ahead ofTrumpspotted a gun barrel in some bushes near the property line.

Multiple agents engaged Routh andfired at least four rounds at him.

The gunman then dropped his AK-47 style rifle, two backpacks, a GoPro camera and other items and fled in a black Nissan car, a report by the news agency Reuters said.

Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said a witness managed to take a photo of the suspected gunman's car and license plate and gave it to authorities.

Shortly after, sheriff's deputies in neighbouring Martin County stopped the suspect on Interstate 95 and took Routh into custody.

'Relieved that Trump was unharmed'

Moments after the assassination attempt on Trump, Biden said on Sunday he was relieved that the Republican presidential candidate was unharmed.

In a series of posts on his official X account,Bidensaid that he had been briefed about the incident and that he had directed his team to ensure the Secret Service has the resources it needs to ensureTrump's safety.

"I am relieved that the former President is unharmed. There is an active investigation into this incident as law enforcement gathers more details about what happened," Biden said.

The attempt onTrump's life came after he wasshot at a campaign rallyin Pennsylvania on July 13, sustaining a minor injury to his right ear. The shooter, identified as 20-year-old Thomas Crooks, was shot dead by the Secret Service.
