
Russian state media company VGTRK was targeted in a massive cyberattack on the day of Russian President Vladimir Putin's 72nd birthday, on Monday (Oct 7). A report by news agency Reuters citing aUkrainian government source said Kyiv's hackers were behind the incident.
The media conglomerate owns and operates the country's main national TV stations.
The website of VGTRK, the All-Russia State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company, was not loading early on Monday. Additionally,its Rossiya-24, a rolling 24-hour news channel, was also affected and was not available online.
"503 Service Unavailable. No server is available to handle this request," the error read when Reuters reporters tried to access the livestream.
"Our state media holding, one of the largest, has faced an unprecedented hacker attack on its digital infrastructure," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters, saying VGTRK was working to overcome the consequences.
"Specialists are working to find out all the circumstances, to understand where the traces left behind by those who organised this hacker attack on the critical infrastructure object lead," Peskov added.
The attack on Russian state media on the day of Putin's birthday prompted speculations about the motives behind the assault.
According to Reuters,an unnamedgovernment source from Ukraine claimed responsibility on behalf of Ukrainian hackers, stating that the attack was a symbolic birthday "gift" to the Russian president.

Moreover, the attack not only affected external broadcasts but also crippled VGTRK's internal systems, including its telephoneand internet services, with reports indicating that even backup servers were wiped, according to the Russian news outlet Gazeta.ru.
Following the attack, the Russian Foreign Ministry's spokesperson Maria Zakharova, announced that Moscow would raise the issue in international forums, including UNESCO, which promotes freedom of speech.
She said that Russian media had long since become targets for what she called "the collective West" and said what had happened was part of a "hybrid war".
