
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday (August 23) pressed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to engage in talks with Russia to bring an end to the Russia-Ukraine war. Modi assured that India is ready to act as a 'friend' to help end the war during his first visit to Ukraine.
"We were not neutral from day one, we have taken a side, and we stand firmly for peace," PM Modi said.
In a joint statement made to the press, Modi said that his visit to Kyiv carried a message of peace. He encouraged both Russia and Ukraine to sit down for talks as soon as possible.
"The road to resolution can only be found through dialogue and diplomacy. And we should move in that direction without wasting any time. Both sides should sit together to find a way out of this crisis," the Indian PMsaid.
"I want to assure you that India is ready to play an active role in any efforts towards peace. If I can play any role in this personally, I will do that I want to assure you as a friend," he added.
"Our approach are always people centric- I want to assure to the whole world that we stand for territorial integrity. While I was in Moscow - I told very clear that this is not time for war, any resolution can bring through dialogue, discussion not on war field. Both sides need to sit together and should find way for peace,"PM Modi said.
"This visit is very friendly and important for all Ukrainians,"Zelenskytoldreporters.
Indian External Affairs Minister (EAM)Dr SJaishankar during a press briefing said, "PM Modi has invited Ukraine President Zelenskyy to visit India...We expect that as per his convenience President Zelenskyy will visit India."
"As you know, Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Kyiv this morning and we've just concluded his official engagements. This is a landmark visit. It's the first time that an Indian PM has visited Ukraine since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1992," EAM said.
"PM arrived by a special train in the morning and he was received by the First Deputy Foreign Minister at the Kyiv railway station. He met the Indian community...His last engagement is going on right now, which is that he's meeting Ukrainian students who are studying Hindi," he added.
