
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi began his one-day visit to war-torn Ukraine on Friday (Aug 23).This is the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Ukraine since its independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. Modi's visit also comes as the war between Russia and Ukraine rages on.
Visuals showed Prime Minister Modi's convoy arriving in Kyiv. He was also seen meeting the Indian diaspora in Ukraine amid chants of "Bharat Mata ki Jai."
Indian PM Modi's visit (to Ukraine)included a notable stop at the multimedia Martyrologist at the Ukraine National Museum. Here, Modi would honoured the memory of Ukrainian children, whose lives were taken by the full-scale Russian invasion. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenksy was present at the museum.
Following his visit to the museum, Modi will pay homage to Mahatma Gandhi's statue at the A.V. Fomin Botanical Garden.
Modi and Zelensky will be holding a restricted meeting to discuss key issues. High-level delegation meetings will follow, where important discussions on bilateral cooperation are expected.
Document exchanges will take place to formalise agreements and collaborations between New Delhi and Kyiv.
Before arriving in Ukraine, Modi was in Poland where he said that the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and West Asia were "a matter of deep concern for all of us."
"India firmly believes that no problem can be solved on the battlefield. The loss of innocent lives in any crisis has become the biggest challenge for the entire humanity. We support dialogue and diplomacy for the early restoration of peace and stability," Modi said during a press joint press conference with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk.
