Iran MP alleges pager blast could be behind president Ebrahim Raisi's death

Ebrahim Raisi

Was a pager blast behind the death of Iranian president Ebrahim Raisi? As Iran continues to reel from the pager and walkie-talkie blasts that claimed the lives of dozens of people and injured nearly 3,000, reports suggest that a similar blast could've been behind Raisi's death in a helicopter crash in May.

Iranian MP Ahmad Bakhshayesh Ardestani, as per reports, said that Raisi at the time of his death was using a pager.

A likely scenario

Ardestani said,"One likely scenario regarding the deadly helicopter crash that killed President Ebrahim Raisi is the explosion of his pager."

However, he said that the leader might have been using a different brand of pager.

Talking to Didban Iran, the MP also said that Iran played a part in the purchase of pagers for the Shi'ite Islamist militant group Hezbollah and asked for Tehran to hold its own investigation into the pager blast incident.

Iranian forces "certainly played a role in the purchase of Hezbollah's pagers, and therefore, our own intelligence agencies must also investigate this matter," said the Iranian MP.

"The Israelis have infiltrated the layers of Hezbollah in Lebanon," he alleged.

Raisi's cause of death

63-year-old Ebrahim Raisi, who was regarded as a hardliner and a potential successor to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, died in the air crash on May 19, 2024 along with seven others, including his foreign minister, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian.

Recently, on September 1, Iran concluded its final investigation into the helicopter crash that killedRaisi in May. It found that "complicated" weather conditions were the primary cause.

According to the investigation report, the helicopter collided with a mountain due to "complex climatic and atmospheric conditions of the region" prevalent during the spring.

It stated the "sudden emergence of a thick mass of dense and rising fog". An earlier military report in May had ruled out any foul play or attack.

The report was issued by a high committee charged by Iran's military with investigating the incident.
