Canadian police said that a 28-year-old man of Indian origin was killed in a targeted shooting in Burnaby, British Columbia. The investigators believe that the killing is linked to the ongoing BC gang conflict. The shooting occurred shortly before 5:30 pm (local time) on January 22 near the 3700 block of Canada Way, Burnaby, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said in a statement. Frontline officers responded to reports of gunfire and found a male victim with critical injuries. The man, later identified as Dilraj Singh Gill, was pronounced dead despite life-saving efforts at the scene.
Within minutes of the shooting, police located a vehicle engulfed in flames in the 5000 block of Buxton Street, several kilometres from the shooting site, the statement added. Investigators are now treating the burned vehicle as directly connected to the homicide.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) has taken over the case and identified the victim as Dilraj Singh Gill, a resident of Vancouver.
“At this time, IHIT investigators believe that this was a targeted shooting. Mr Gill was known to police, and the shooting appears to have a nexus to the BC gang conflict,” police said in an update.
Sergeant Freda Fong of IHIT said the killing has deeply unsettled the community because of the public nature of the attack. “A shooting, especially in a public place, is extremely troubling, not only for the police but for the entire community,” Fong said.

“Information from witnesses and those in the area will be crucial in ensuring this investigation advances and to hold those responsible accountable.”
Investigators are now working in tandem with Burnaby RCMP, the Lower Mainland Integrated Forensic Identification Service, and the BC Coroners Service to reconstruct the sequence of events and collect forensic evidence from both crime scenes.
Police believe the suspects fled after the shooting and may have used the vehicle that was later found burning on Buxton Street.

IHIT has issued an appeal seeking video evidence and witnesses. Officers are seeking dashcam or CCTV footage recorded between 5 pm and 6:30 pm on January 22 along Canada Way, from Boundary Road to Willingdon Avenue, as well as in the Buxton Street area near Royal Oak Avenue and Forglen Drive.
Investigators are also seeking footage captured between 4:30 pm and 6 pm near Canada Way and Laurel Street, between Boundary Road and Gilmore Way, the RCMP statement added.
