The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) on Tuesday (Oct 29) said that its troops have achieved their goals in Lebanon and that the Israeli government can now go ahead with promoting a diplomatic resolution to end the conflict in the country's north.
According to a Walla report, the IDF's Northern Command has destroyed most of the terrorist infrastructure in the "contact villages" near the Lebanon-Israel border. It said that most of the weapons had either been destroyed in the field or transferred to Israel.

However, as per the report, the Israeli military also said that in spite of the progress, the work is not done. It said that there were some villages where the work was not complete, and the Shin Bet and IDF intelligence operations still need to be completed.
What if a diplomatic settlement is not reached?
As per the report, two things can happen if a diplomatic agreement is not reached.
One, the military pressure will continue via ground manoeuvres and airstrikes.

Two, the Israeli military maintains its possession of the territories in Southern Lebanon, currently held by IDF soldiers. In this scenario, IDF forces may be required to expand operation control of the villages.
The IDF said that in either case, and whether the diplomatic settlement is achieved or not, it would be required to present a model for enforcing order in southern Lebanon.
