Victims are recounting the horror of the Crocus City Hall attack that shook Moscow Friday (Mar 22) and left at least 133 people dead. Eyewitness accounts documented by Russian media reveal how some people may have avoided death by just lying on the floor and pretending to be dead.
One girl, who was among a lucky group of few people to have fled the carnage, was quoted as saying by state-funded RT news channel that she saved her life by pretending to be dead.
“They (attackers) saw us. One of them ran back and started shooting at people. I fell to the floor and pretended to be dead. I was bleeding,” she said. “The girl lying next to me was killed,” she added, saying the terrorists opened fire on people who were lying on the ground.
According to Russian police, the four men who wreaked havoc on the concert hall were arrested on Saturday. All appeared to be from Tajikistan, as per reports.
Another victim, 27-year-old Arina, was quoted as saying by the Guardian that she heard a large bang “coming from outside the room, we thought it was part of the concert.”
“But at some point, we understood that something was seriously wrong, we realised there were shootings,” Arina added.
“We all lay on the ground. I looked beside me and I saw many injured people covered in blood.”
A woman tried to speak to one of the attackers, before being shot to death at point-blank range, she recounted.
Another victim Alexander said the attackers didn’t say anything and started shooting indiscriminately. “They didn’t say anything. They just started shooting at the people in front of them,” he said.
After executing the deadly carnage inside, the gunmen then set the hall to fire and tried to lock it up in order to kill all those left inside.
“They closed the front door, but they probably couldn’t close the lock,” said the woman. After some time, she crawled out and ran towards the exit. “I realised that there was no one there and went outside,” she said.
Videos circulating on social media show attackers used machine guns, incendiary bombs and grenades to carry out one of the deadliest attacks in Russia in recent times.
