Green cards for Indian students? Trump proposes citizenship for foreign students studying in US

Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, suggested on Thursday (June 20) giving green cards to students who graduate from college in the United States, a proposal that counters his usual tough stance on immigration.

US needs high-skill workers

In a podcast hosted by Silicon Valley tech investors, angel investor Jason Calacanis told Trump that the US needs to be able to retain more skilled workers.

Calacanis asked, "Can you please promise us you will give us more ability to import the best and brightest around the world to America?" Trump said yes.

He said he thinks students graduating from college should automatically get a green card along with their diplomas.

"I do promise," Trump said. "But I happen to agree, otherwise I wouldn't promise… You graduate from a college, I think you should get automatically as part of your diploma a green card to be able to stay in this country, and that includes junior colleges too."

However, it wasn't clear if Trump meant all foreigners, including those who came illegally or stayed after their visas expired, or just students on visas.

However, the Trump campaign elaborated on Trump's statement, saying only after "the most aggressive vetting process in US history," would "the most skilled graduates who can make significant contributions to America" be able to stay.

Activists not convinced

Even as Trump took a U-turn on his usually harsh stance on immigrants, activists are not convinced.

Aaron Reichlin-Melnick, policy director at the American Immigration Council, commented, "I almost have to laugh because his administration adopted multiple policies aiming to restrict student visas and make it harder for people to stay in the country after graduating."

During his time as president, Trump made it harder for companies to hire skilled workers from other countries on H-1B visas.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, his administration even tried to force tens of thousands of foreign students to leave if their schools only did online classes. He changed his mind later because of lawsuits and opposition.
