The sanctions follow US President Donald Trump's decision to reinstate his "maximum pressure" policy of sanctions against Tehran.
"Iran continues to rely on a shadowy network of vessels, shippers, and brokers to facilitate its oil sales and fund its destabilising activities," said US Treasury Scott Bessent announcing the designations.

"The United States will use all our available tools to target all aspects of Iran's oil supply chain, and anyone who deals in Iranian oil exposes themselves to significant sanctions risk," he added.&nbsp;

Indian firms named in the sanctions include:
- BSM Marine Limited Liability Partnership, which serves as the commercial manager for a vessel named Yateeka. The company as per The Wire is publically listed as based in Gurugram, Haryana and was incorporated in 2022. It has been sanctioned for "knowingly engaging in a significant transaction for the transport of petroleum from Iran".

- One Austinship Management Private Limited, based in Noida, the commercial and ISM manager of the vessel Amak has been listed for "knowingly engaging in a significant transaction for the transport of petroleum from Iran."
- Flux Maritime LLP, which was set up in 2023 and is based out of Navi Mumbai, has also been named in the Office of Foreign Assets Control's sanctions list.

Under the right conditions, Zeng said he was willing to enter the U.S. market, but previous attempts at investing had been blocked by trade barriers.

Constraint by stringent trade restrictions, including national security and competitive concern, the U.S. has curbed it on Chinese EV and battery manufacturers. These laws, equally backed by Democrats and Republicans, essentially cut off the market to Chinese firms like CATL and BYD for batteries or EVs sold in the U.S. Chinese-made batteries don't qualify for the U.S. consumer EV subsidies introduced by the Biden administration, and Chinese EV imports are subject to a 100 percent tariff, or a de facto ban. But a Republican-backed bill would additionally curb EV purchase incentives for cars packed with Chinese battery tech.

But Trump has given the sign that he is open to letting Chinese companies set up factories here, so long as they create American jobs. In an August interview, Trump said companies that built plants in America and employed American workers would get incentives, saying if companies didn't do those things, 'we're going to shut that stuff down.' Zeng has kept himself interested in a possible U.S. expansion for CATL with this approach.

CATL currently only has licensing deals in the U.S. for now. CATL is also preparing to open a Michigan plant to produce the lithium phosphate batteries for the new Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning EV models, said Ford. CATL’s technology will also be used by Tesla to produce a battery factory in Nevada beginning in 2025.

Zeng, who frequently communicates with Tesla CEO Elon Musk, shared insights on Musk’s strategic focus on artificial intelligence and autonomous driving technology. However, it is not clear whether Melania knew about the hush money payment, but according to Cohen, after he left Trump a voicemail stating that Daniels might sell her story to the Daily Mail, Melania had texted him, "Good morning Michael, can u pls call DT on his cell. Thanks."

Cohen said that Trump asked him to postpone payment to Daniels until after the 2016 election, reasoning that if Trump won, he would already be president, and if he lost, it wouldn't have consequences.&nbsp;

Cohen testified that he had no plans to stick to the agreement's funding deadline with Daniels.

US President Donald Trump threatened Iran this week with a "thousand times stronger" response in case of any attack on his country, following the report.

South Africa's state security agency said Friday it had found no evidence of such a plot against Marks.

President Donald Trump announced Wednesday that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will activate a controversial mechanism aimed at reimposing UN sanctions on Iran, escalating a row with European allies that has huge repercussions for the Iranian nuclear deal.

Pompeo will travel to New York on Thursday to notify the United Nations Security Council that the US is triggering the so-called "snapback" procedure, which Britain, France and Germany say it doesn't have the right to do.

"It's a snapback, not uncommon," Trump told reporters, despite the contested measure having never been used before.

The move comes after the United States suffered a humiliating defeat at the Security Council last week when it failed to muster support for a resolution to extend a conventional arms embargo on Iran.

"Snapback" aims to restore all international sanctions against Iran that were lifted as part of the 2015 accord with Tehran that sought to prevent it from developing nuclear weapons.

But it also threatens to torpedo the historic Iran nuclear deal that the US, China, Russia, France, Britain and Germany signed with Tehran in 2015.

Trump withdrew the US from the agreement, known officially as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), in 2018 and introduced American sanctions on Iran as part of a "maximum pressure" campaign against the Iranian regime.

Potential 'crisis'

Despite pulling out of the deal, America claims that, as a "participant" of the original agreement, it has the power to unilaterally reimpose UN sanctions on Iran.

A 2015 UN Security Council resolution ratifying the agreement negotiated by former president Barack Obama says participating states can unilaterally reinstall sanctions if Iran has failed to significantly comply with the accord.

The "snapback" procedure is supposed to lead to the re-establishment of sanctions after 30 days, without the possibility of Russia or China wielding their vetoes.

European countries on the Security Council contest the US' legal argument and fear that the return of sanctions will sink the nuclear deal, which they are battling to save.

"This will be (a) fully valid enforceable UN Security Council resolution. We have every expectation that it will be enforced just like every other UN Security Council resolution that is in place," Pompeo said.

Last week, only the Dominican Republic joined the United States in backing its call to extend a conventional arms embargo on Iran that expires on October 18.

The embargo expires under the terms of JCPOA. Although European countries had expressed concern about the 13-year embargo expiring, their main focus is on preserving the nuclear accord.

The vote highlighted how isolated the US is over Iran at the UN.

Experts say the snapback threatens to plunge the Security Council into crisis.

"Most of the council will reject the US argument that it retains the right to trigger snapback despite leaving the JCPOA. They will write off this process as a sham," UN expert Richard Gowan told AFP.

"The real winners in this process will be China and Russia, who will argue that they are defending the UN from US unilateralism, while the Europeans distance themselves from Washington," added Gowan, who works at the International Crisis Group think-tank.

Pompeo is scheduled to meet UN chief Antonio Guterres at the latter's residence in New York around 2:00 pm (1800 GMT) on Thursday when they will discuss Iran.
