German court rejects motion to stop the federal government from supplying arms to Israel

Advertisment

According to media reports, a Berlin court on Friday denied a plea to stop German military sales to Israel.

This was the second legal attempt to stop the federal government from supplying arms to Israel, made by a father and son from the Gaza Strip. The first attempt was an urgent request to stop the export of German weapons to Israel by a number of Gazans which was also rejected by a Berlin administrative court.

This time around the Palestinian request sought to halt arms shipments through what is known as interim legal protection. However, the higher court noted that it's impossible to definitively predict the future decisions of the federal government or the specific legal and factual circumstances under which these decisions will be made.

The court also stated that it cannot be predicted if the German government would authorise arms deliveries that breach international law.

Israel agrees to resume ceasefire negotiations following requests from US, Qatar, and Egypt

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office announced that his government has agreed to resume ceasefire talks amid the ongoing war in Gaza on August 15, following requests from US, Qatari, and Egyptian mediators.

"Pursuant to the proposal by the US and the mediators, Israel will, on August 15, send the negotiations team to a place to be determined to finalise the details of the implementation of the framework agreement," an official statement from Netanyahu's office said.

Israel's participation comes after the United States, Qatar, and Egypt released a joint statement, inviting Israel and Hamas for ceasefire negotiations on August 15 in Doha or Cairo "to close all remaining gaps and commence implementation of the deal without further delay."

"There is no further time to waste, nor excuses from any party for further delay," they said in a joint statement.
