Ajit Rai, chairman of US federal communications commission (FCC) has issued a statement opposing federal government move to build a super-fast 5G wireless network on Monday.
He called running a national super-fast network "costly and counterproductive."
"Any federal effort to construct a nationalized 5G network would be a costly and counterproductive distraction from the policies we need to help the United States win the 5G future," FCC Chairman Ajit Pai said in a statement.
The reaction of chairman could be taken as a response to the report of the senior national security council to have the government build a 5G wireless network.
The report was published on Axios.com.
Earlier in the day, a senior administration official was reported saying that Donald Trump's national security team is looking at options to counter the threat of China spying on US phone calls that include the government building the 5G wireless network.
5G network upgraded from 4g is expected to have faster speed, more capacity and shorter response times which could be utilized for new technologies ranging from self-driving cars to remote surgeries. Telecom companies and their suppliers consider it to be a multibillion-dollar revenue opportunity.
