Did Netanyahu install a bugging device in Boris Johnson's toilet? Ex-PM claims so in book

Boris Johnson and Benjamin Netanyahu

Boris Johnson, the colourful former prime minister, has claimed that Benjamin Netanyahu left a bugging device in his bathroom when the Israeli premier visited Britainin 2017, when BoJo was serving the foreign secretary.

It should be noted that Johnson, 60, who was Britain’s foreign minister in 2016-2018, and PM in 2019-2022, has had a firm pro-Israel stance over the years.

The shocking revelation is being made in the upcoming memoir of the journalist-politician, aptly titled Unleashed, as per excerpts cited in the Daily Telegraph.

The Tory politician claimed that the listening device was found in his bathroom at the Foreign Office during a swoop by security personnel.

The bathroom in question, which BoJo described fit for "gents in a posh London club," was situated in a "secret annex," in the foreign office premlises.

"Thither Bibi repaired for a while, and it may or may not be a coincidence but I am told that later, when they were doing a regular sweep for bugs, they found a listening device in the thunderbox,” Johnson wrote.

When The Telegraph sought further details, the Conservative leader told the UK paper: “I think everything you need to know about that episode is in the book.”

The Telegraph report said it was not clear whether the UK confronted Israel over the incident.

Johnson, who was thrown out of office in 2022 in an inner-party coup following allegations including Covid pandemic rule violations, has raised more than a few eyebrows with his new book even before its release.

Unleashed, which releases on October 10, reportedly has a number of other claims, including one that Queen Elizabeth suffered from bone marrow cancer.

He also accused Emmanuel Macron of trying to give the UK a “punishment beating” for Brexit, the UK's exit from the European Union which the French president was not happy about.

According to multiple reports, this is not the first time that Israel faced allegations of spying on friendly countries and allies. Reports back in 2019 had suggested that the Jewish country's operatives did a surveillance operation near the White House.

It was done by tricking mobile phones into giving out their locations and identity information, according to a 2019 report in Politico. The allegation was rejected by Netanyahu, but the then-US president Donald Trump said it was “hard to believe.”

The UK has also been accused of spying on Israel. In 2016, the French paper Le Monde reported that the UK spied on Israeli government and diplomatic missions in other countries, citing leaked US intelligence information.
