Let's take a quick look:
Times Washington accused Beijing of espionage
In 2016, the US Justice Department charged Chinese national Xu Jiaqiang with economic espionage and theft of proprietary source code, alleging that the material was intended to benefit China's National Health and Family Planning Commission. Xu later pleaded guilty to the charges. In 2017, former CIA officer Kevin Patrick Mallory was charged with passing classified information to a Chinese intelligence officer. He was later convicted and sentenced to 20 years in prison. Separately, Chinese intelligence officer Xu Yanjun was accused of attempting to obtain aviation trade secrets from US companies. Xu was extradited to the US, convicted and sentenced to 20 years in prison. In 2020, US prosecutors accused four members of China's People's Liberation Army of hacking Equifax and stealing personal information belonging to about 145 million Americans. That year, the Justice Department also charged Chinese hackers allegedly working with the Ministry of State Security with a global hacking campaign targeting intellectual property, business information and COVID-19 research. In 2021, US prosecutors accused four Chinese nationals, including alleged MSS officers, of carrying out a years-long hacking campaign targeting companies, universities and government entities. The alleged theft included information considered economically valuable to Chinese companies and commercial sectors. In 2022, the Justice Department charged Chinese intelligence officers and a US citizen in separate cases involving alleged efforts to spy on dissidents and human rights activists in the United States. Another case alleged that Chinese intelligence officers used an academic institution as cover while attempting to recruit people in the US to support Chinese intelligence objectives. In 2024, US authorities accused China-linked hackers of conducting extensive cyber espionage. The Justice Department charged seven alleged members of the APT31 hacking group, saying the group had targeted political officials, candidates, campaign personnel, businesses and critics of China. Separately, the FBI and CISA said PRC-affiliated actors had compromised multiple telecommunications companies in what they described as a broad cyber espionage campaign. In 2025, US authorities continued announcing cases involving alleged Chinese intelligence activity. The Justice Department charged two people with allegedly carrying out clandestine intelligence tasks for China's MSS, including gathering information about US Navy personnel and bases and attempting to recruit potential military assets. A former US Army soldier also pleaded guilty to attempting to provide national defense information to China, while a US Navy sailor was convicted of espionage and export violations after prosecutors said he sold Navy secrets to a Chinese intelligence officer. In 2026, the Justice Department announced that an American citizen, Thomas Weir Pauken II, had pleaded guilty to acting as an agent of the PRC. A major security alert was triggered at Germany's Leipzig/Halle Airport after authorities discovered an explosive-laden drone near a Ukrainian Antonov cargo aircraft. Flights were diverted for several hours as bomb disposal teams deployed a robot to safely remove the detonator from the unmanned aerial vehicle.

The airport plays a crucial role in transporting military supplies for the German Armed Forces and NATO allies and also serves as a key base for Ukraine's Antonov Airlines. German officials described the incident as extremely serious and launched a full-scale investigation into the drone's origin and those responsible.

Germany's Interior Minister urged caution against speculation, saying investigators are examining every possible angle, including the possibility of foreign involvement. Officials also warned that the incident reflects the growing hybrid security threats facing Europe.

A New York Times investigation has alleged that Russia has turned Japan into a key hub for espionage, covert procurement, and the sourcing of critical technology used in the Russia-Ukraine war. The report claims Russian intelligence officers operating under diplomatic and commercial cover have exploited Japan's relatively weak espionage laws to acquire sensitive components. Japan has acknowledged the need to strengthen its intelligence and counter-espionage capabilities, with Parliament approving a new national intelligence coordination body. The report also alleges that procurement networks routed military-use technology through intermediary countries to bypass export controls.

China on Friday (Jun 12) said that it had detained an American national accused of spying on the country. The individual, identified as Min Zin, is a political analyst and founder of the Institute for Strategy and Policy Myanmar (ISP-M), an independent research organisation focused on developments in Myanmar. Speaking at a press briefing, Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Lin Jian said that the authorities were holding him on “suspicion of engaging in espionage activities that endanger China’s national security.”Lin Jian said that Min Zin “has been subjected to criminal compulsory measures.” He did not provide any further details about the allegations or evidence supporting them.Min Zin’s research work focuses on Myanmar’s political landscape, conflict dynamics and regional security issues. The ISP-M regularly publishes research on the country’s civil war, governance challenges and the influence of foreign powers, including China, in Myanmar’s border regions.AFP reported, citing a person with professional ties to ISP-M, that Min Zin was arrested on Jun 3 after arriving at Kunming airport in China’s Yunnan province, which shares a border with Myanmar. Individuals close to the case said he had travelled to the city to attend a meeting, though it remains unclear whether his visit was connected to research activities. Chinese authorities have informed the US consulate in Guangzhou of the case.“His family and colleagues are following up with the consulate office there,” AFP cited a source as saying. “I know his family is worried.”The US State Department or the ISP-M have not yet made any official statement on the matter. The ISP-M is located in Chiang Mai, a northern Thai city that has emerged as a refuge for Myanmar political exiles after the 2021 coup ended civilian rule under Aung San Suu Kyi.According to analysts, including those at the ISP-M, Beijing’s role had been in question. China on Friday (Jun 12) said that it had detained an American national accused of spying on the country. The individual, identified as Min Zin, is a political analyst and founder of the Institute for Strategy and Policy Myanmar (ISP-M), an independent research organisation focused on developments in Myanmar. Speaking at a press briefing, Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Lin Jian said that the authorities were holding him on “suspicion of engaging in espionage activities that endanger China’s national security.” Lin Jian said that Min Zin “has been subjected to criminal compulsory measures.” He did not provide any further details about the allegations or evidence supporting them. Min Zin’s research work focuses on Myanmar’s political landscape, conflict dynamics and regional security issues. The ISP-M regularly publishes research on the country’s civil war, governance challenges and the influence of foreign powers, including China, in Myanmar’s border regions. AFP reported, citing a person with professional ties to ISP-M, that Min Zin was arrested on Jun 3 after arriving at Kunming airport in China’s Yunnan province, which shares a border with Myanmar. Individuals close to the case said he had travelled to the city to attend a meeting, though it remains unclear whether his visit was connected to research activities. Chinese authorities have informed the US consulate in Guangzhou of the case. “His family and colleagues are following up with the consulate office there,” AFP cited a source as saying. “I know his family is worried.” The US State Department or the ISP-M have not yet made any official statement on the matter. The ISP-M is located in Chiang Mai, a northern Thai city that has emerged as a refuge for Myanmar political exiles after the 2021 coup ended civilian rule under Aung San Suu Kyi. According to analysts, including those at the ISP-M, Beijing’s role had been in question. They have alleged that China has at times supported both Myanmar’s military and certain rebel groups, depending on its strategic, economic and security priorities.

China has detained US researcher Min Zin on espionage allegations, claiming he endangered national security. The case has drawn attention amid ongoing scrutiny of foreign researchers in China.
