Biden, Netanyahu review hostage-release talks in new call: White House
United States President Joe Biden on Sunday (Apr 28) spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over a phone call and "reviewed ongoing talks" to release the hostages held by Hamas since the unprecedented assault against Israel on Oct 7.
The White House released a statement saying that the two allies "reviewed ongoing talks to secure the release of hostages together with an immediate ceasefire in Gaza."
Biden and Netanyahu "also discussed increases in the delivery of humanitarian assistance into Gaza, including through preparations to open new northern crossings starting this week," the statement said.
"The President stressed the need for this progress to be sustained and enhanced in full coordination with humanitarian organizations," it said.
The statement further said that Biden also "reiterated his clear position" on any Israeli attack on the southern Gaza city of Rafah.
Egypt, Qatar and the United States have been making repeated efforts to broker a new Gaza ceasefire deal after 80 Israeli hostages were released in exchange for 240 Palestinians in the month of November following a ceasefire deal.

Hamas official says will respond to Israeli Gaza truce proposal in Egypt on Monday
A senior Hamas official on Sunday (Apr 28) said that the Palestinian militant group would announce its response to the latest Gaza ceasefire counterproposal by Israel in Egypt on Monday (Apr 29).
"A Hamas delegation headed by Khalil al-Hayya will arrive in Egypt tomorrow... and deliver the movement's response" to the Israeli proposal during a meeting with Egyptian intelligence officials, said the official who declined to be named.
Earlier this week, Egypt had sent its own delegation to restart the stalled negotiations even as the offensive in Gaza intensifies.
Abbas says only US can stop Israel’s attack on Rafah
Meanwhile, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Sunday (Apr 28) said that the United States was the only country that could stop an Israeli invasion of the border city of Rafah in Gaza.
"We call on the United States of America to ask Israel not to carry on the Rafah attack. America is the only country able to prevent Israel from committing this crime," Abbas said at a special meeting of the World Economic Forum in the Saudi capital Riyadh.
He further stated that the Israeli offensive, which is expected to take place in the coming days, could prompt an evacuation in the region, pushing people out of the besieged Palestinian enclave, saying that this could be the "biggest catastrophe in the Palestinian people's history".
