At least 16 killed in Israeli attack on UNRWA-run school, says Palestinian health ministry in Gaza

Israeli strike at UNRWA school sheltering displaced people in Gaza

The health ministry in Hamas-run Gaza said that an Israeli strike on a school sheltering displaced people killed 16 individuals, reported news agency AFP on Saturday (July 6). The ministry informed that around 50 people were injured following the Israeli strike in the Nuseirat area in central Gaza.

According to the officials, at least 16 people have been killed and 50 injured by the attack on the school in Nuseirat refugee camp, which is home to approximately 7,000 people.

The ministry condemned the strike by Israel and called it an odious massacre. Those injured were taken to hospital from Al-Jawni school at Nuseirat in central Gaza, said the Hamas-run health ministry.

The UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) said earlier that two of its workers were killed in a strike at Al-Bureij in central Gaza, where the UNRWA has a major food warehouse.

"Absolutely no place in the Gaza Strip is safe," said civil defence spokesman Mahmud Bassal.

The war began with Hamas' October 7 attack on southern Israel, resulting in 1,195 deaths, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on Israeli figures.

The Palestinian militants also took over 200 hostages, out of which 116 are still in Gaza.
