British zoologist Adam Britton, who raped and tortured over 40 dogs, is suffering from a psychiatric condition known as paraphilia. Details of his mental health condition were revealed in a court in Darwin, Australia, last week. Britton's depraved acts committed between the years of 2020 and 2022 led to the death of 39 dogs. However, some say that he had likely been doing them since 2014. The crocodile expertpleaded guilty to more than 50 charges relating to animal cruelty in 2023. He is now facing a 249-year jail sentence.
Britton broke down as the details of his condition and the punishment were announced in the Darwin Supreme Court. The case has been adjourned till August 8.
Britton's lawyer told the court about his medical condition paraphilia, a condition where the person experiences abnormal sexual desires and fantasies about unusual objects, such as animals. It can also extend to other areas which can lead to social and legal consequences, such as non-consenting adults and children. According to experts, most types of paraphilia are rare, with males 20 times more likely to have this condition than females.

His horrific acts happened in a "torture room" inside a shipping container. He even filmed himself raping and abusing the animals. He would then beat the dogs to death. He later shared the videos on Telegram for others who derived pleasure from such acts. Britton, who has been termed "world's worst animal abuser," got the dogs through the classified ads website Gumtree, where he offered to rehabilitate rescue dogs at his property near Darwin.
Britton expressed remorse for his acts during 30 sessions he had with a psychologist. His lawyer, who is reportedly getting threats, said that he has been afflicted by the condition since very early childhood, and that "it is not his fault that he had that."
“This particular condition is exceptionally taboo in most societies and the court can and I hope would, accept that that would have been a very difficult thing to grow up with and learn to manage into adulthood.”
Meanwhile, prosecutor Marty Aust told the court how elaborate Britton got while filming the scenes, with tripods and multiple cameras set up. He even edited the videos, and Aust said “If you watch that footage you will see the extreme pleasure and enjoyment that this man had in creating this and doing these acts."
Aust contended that like any other human being with a "particular sexual interest”, Britton was “able to rationally determine whether to act on that interest”.
A month after he posted the videos, an online detective alerted the police about him. They raided his home and recovered 44 items - computers, cameras, phones, hard drives and weapons. Child abuse videos were also found on one laptop.
