Dramatic visuals surfaced as twin earthquakes - one of 6.9 magnitude and the other of 7.1 magnitude - rocked southern Japan and sent people into a frenzy as they ran for life and sought shelter beneath the furniture.
In the footage shared on social media platform X, people appeared afraid and clueless as things around them shook violently and some of the items even fell on the ground.
As reported by broadcaster NHK, tsunamis were expected to reach coastal areas in Kyushu and Shikoku islands.

The first quake took place at a depth of 33 kilometres (20 miles) and the second one struck at a depth of 25 kilometres, reported the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
A special task force was established by the Japanese government in response to the quakes, as per a statement.

After the earthquake, no reports of abnormalities emerged at nuclear power plants and Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi said that the government has been checking for any kind of damage and casualties.
The quake took place at around 4:43 p.m. (0743 GMT) near Miyazaki prefecture which is on the western major island of Kyushu, as stated by the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).
As reported by public broadcaster NHK, the waves were as high as 50 cm (20 inches) in Miyazaki.
