Underwear rain down after officials induce artificial rains in Chinese city

Chongqing

An "underwear crisis" has hit a Chinese city where heavy winds have sent people's laundry flying. Dubbed the "9/2 Chongqing underwear crisis", this day, Sep 2, saw people's underwear flying off their balconies. On the same day, authorities artificially seeded clouds to stimulate rainfall and break a severe heatwave. Later, level 8 winds hit the city. But authorities stressed that the two events are not linked.

People were quick to speculate that the artificial rain stimulation was what caused the laundry to scatter. Notably, it is common for people in China to handwash their underwear and hang them out to dry.

Social media was abuzz with reports of people losing their clothes during the "underwear crisis". Some of them even talked about how underwear came flying over their head.

"I just went out and it suddenly started to rain heavily and underwear fell from the sky,” a person named Ethele wrote on Weibo.

Another wrote, "Did anyone see my white polka dot undie?" A user commented, "Whose white polka dot undie flew to my roof?"

Heatwave in China

A heatwave has gripped Southwestern China, with temperatures hitting 43 degrees Celsius. Schools in the region have been closed due to the extreme weather.

In a bid to combat the heat, authorities reportedly used cloud seeding, a technique that induces artificial rains by dispersing chemicals like silver iodide into clouds.

Officials admit that nearly 200 cloud-seeding rockets were fired, but maintain that the strong winds did not happen because of that. Zhang Yixuan, deputy director of the Chongqing Weather Modification Office, said the winds happened because of convection.

A hashtag on the matter read, "If you think you messed up at work, just think of the Chongqing Meteorological Bureau”. It reportedly garnered 18 million views, The Guardian reported.

Notably, reports suggest that the artificial rain only lowered the temperature by 1 degree.
