More than 300 people gathered in the Canadian city of Niagara Falls, Ontario, on Monday (Apr 8) morning to break the world record for the “largest gathering of people dressed as the sun,” said city officials in a statement. The record was set as millions in North American countries turned to the sky to watch the total solar eclipse.

‘It’s official!’

The City of Niagara Falls along with Niagara Falls Tourism held an event that saw the participation of 309 people dressed up as the sun to dethrone China, which set the record in 2020. 

On Monday morning, people dressed up as the sun gathered on a Niagara City Cruise to break the world record.

“It’s official! The City of Niagara Falls, in partnership with Niagara Falls Tourism, has broken the Guinness World Record for ‘Largest gathering of people dressed as the sun’ with 309 participants!” said the city, in a statement, on Monday.

It added, “An official Guinness World Record adjudicator was present to adjudicate the event. Congratulations to everyone involved, making this special day even more memorable!”

The previous record was set on December 20, 2020, when 287 people in the Chinese city of Guangzhou dressed as the sun. 

The participants included guests and their family members who attended the awarding ceremony of the 10th Children’s Drawing Competition held by China Life Insurance Company, according to the Guinness World Record. 

Total solar eclipse at Niagara Falls

It was truly a memorable day at Niagara Falls, comprising three waterfalls at the southern end of Niagara Gorge, at the United States-Canada border, which also witnessed at least two weddings and one proposal, as per Reuters, during the solar eclipse.

Around 2,000 people had gathered at the Niagara Falls State Park to watch the astronomical event despite overcast skies. 

However, the weather was subdued eventually and the clouds momentarily parted allowing the crowd to catch the last 30 seconds of the totality. The large gathering reportedly went wild cheering and shouting. 

Meanwhile, on the other side of the river in Niagara Falls, Ontario, broke the world record which involved participants from as far away as Singapore and London.
