Boy from Tamil Nadu invents device to protect wild animals from accidents near railway tracks

Sam Jefferson, a grade 10 student from Tamil Nadu

A boy from the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu has created an automatic device to prevent wildlife deaths near railway tracks. The invention by Sam Jefferson, a 10th grade at the Thanjavur government school, is called Automatic Bar Controlling Forest Animal Accident.

India, quite a few cases of animals dying on railway tracks are reported every year. In Tamil Nadu alone, 36 elephants were hit and killed by trains in the past 10 years. The animals wander near the train tracks for food and get hit by speeding trains or are electrocuted by electric fences.

In a bidto protect wildlife from such accidents, Jefferson, who is the son of a labourer, came up with his invention.

The main aim of this device is to prevent animal accidents near the tracks.

This device has been instrumental in driving wild animals such as elephants, deer and bison away from train tracks and saving lives.

The Automatic Bar Controlling Forest Animal Accident has dual features to protect the animals from accidents. It contains a siren, a submersible motor pump and a relay device.

When an animal is detected a loud alarm goes off to scare them away from the tracks.

If this is not successful in driving animals away, the second feature is activated. This feature activates the submerged motor pump and sprays water on the animals driving them away from the tracks.

Jefferson's teacher supported and encouraged him with this endeavour and suggested that this invention could be used to protect crops like sugarcane as well.

Sam had showcased this invention at the district and regional-level state fairs. He was greatly applauded and received a prize and certificate for his work.

This student-made device is quite efficient in protecting animals from accidents near railway tracks. Sam developed this at a very minimal cost in just four days. He wants to contribute more towards the community through his inventions.
