Archaeologists unearth decapitated child from ‘vampire’ grave beneath a cathedral

The workers made a chilling discovery of a vampire grave while uprooting the trees in the garden of a Cathedral complex in Poland. In the grave, they found the skeleton of a sick child, which was associated with the myths of vampires.

The remains of a decapitated child were discovered around the garden fence and heavy blocks were placed over it. According to the reports of Archeology Mag, there are no historical records which show signs of a cemetery.

Archaeologist with the Lublin Voivodeship Conservator of Monuments, Dr Stanislaw Golub, started an excavation at the site.

The archaeologists said that one of the two bodies, which dated back to the 13thcentury, went through gruelling and brutal precautionary treatment because of which there was no possibility of a supernatural rising from the dead.

Vampire myth that terrified Medieval Poland

The discovery of the grave brought to the fore the terrifying vampire myth which had gripped Medieval Poland.

The remnants of the supernatural beliefs of ancient times were found at the foundation of Christianity Uniate bishop’s Palace in Chelm during a simple renovation project.

Taking to Facebook, the Provincial Office for the Protection of Monuments in Chelm posted images of graphic remains of a child who was believed to be ill with tuberculosis.

Speaking about the excavation, lead archaeologist Dr. Stanisław Gołub said, “The burial clearly shows signs of anti-vampire practices, which were aimed at stopping the dead from rising again."

According to Catholic Herald, more vampiric burials have been discovered in Poland in the past, which included the remains of a woman who had a scythe across her throat and wore a padlock on her toe.

In another funerary rite, the head of a child was found removed and the skull was kept face down to ensure that the dead does not rise again.
