Elon Musk's Grok AI set to roll out for all X premium users this week

Elon Musk's Grok AI set to roll out for all X premium users this week

Tesla owner Elon Musk whose current net worth is $197.7 billion.

Billionaire Elon Musk, who owns xAI, announced on Tuesday (Mar 26)that his company's AI chatbot, Grok, will be accessible to all premium X users starting later this week.

This development arrives amid a growing competition between Musk and his former venture, OpenAI. Musk has recently taken legal action against OpenAI and its CEO Sam Altman, alleging a deviation from the startup's initial objective of creating AI for the betterment of humanity.

Following the lawsuit, OpenAI and its primary product, ChatGPT, have notably drawn criticism from Musk, who has labelled the San Francisco-based startup as "closed AI". Additionally, Musk's xAI has opted to follow in the footsteps of Meta and Mistral by releasing Grok AI as open source under the Apache 2.0 license.

What exactly is Grok and how can it be used?

Musk introduced Grok AI in November of the previous year as a substitute for well-known chatbots like ChatGPT and Gemini (previously known as Bard). Inspired by Douglas Adams' science fiction novel, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, this chatbot was designed to respond to inquiries with a touch of humour and a hint of "rebelliousness". Up to this point, Grok has been accessible solely through an X Premium+ subscription, priced at ₹1,300 ($15.60) per month or ₹13,600 ($164) annually.

Users will now have the opportunity to engage with the Grok AI even with an X Premium subscription, which is priced at ₹650 ($7.8) per month or ₹6,800 ($81.58) per year. However, Musk has not yet confirmed whether or when all X users will have access to Grok AI similar to how they can access ChatGPT version 3.5.

As reported by TechCrunch, Musk's choice to extend Grok access to all premium subscribers may be a strategic move by the billionaire to enhance X's subscriber numbers amidst reports of decreasing usage.

Referring to data from Sensor Tower, the report stated that X usage in the US had declined by 18 per centyear-on-year in February, with a further drop of 23 per cent since Musk assumed control of the company.

Furthermore, Musk's conflicts with advertisers have caused 75 of the top 100 US advertisers on X to stop spending any money on ads on the platform.
